I understand where you're coming from on that subject but the Internet does help a lot with keeping in touch with loved ones who you do know in real life. The fact that I can Skype with my cousin over in Amsterdam an entire ocean away is amazing in of itself and was most likely unthinkable just a couple hundred years ago.
My family has a similar thing. My mom always talks to some cousins of mine in Greece or Mozambique.

You're able to see the persons face, listen to their voice and see their facial expressions. I fail to see how connecting with someone on Skype is any less valid then real life bonding.
It's just the thing of them being there in front of you, rather than up to the other side of the world. It's not something that I can really explain, it's sort of just there.

What has that information really used for in general day-to-day practice? Most of what's shared is just random attention-whoring, social media, and stuff that doesn't need the internet existing. The only two benefits that I'm really getting from the internet is being able to read BBC whenever I want (or ever), and Wikipedia.
