holy fucking shit

the article i read this morning said the outcome was unconfirmed and they simply knew shots were fired. Goddamn the footage shows the dude pointing the gun at them right before he drops the camera and the feed cuts out.

Story

Quote
Two beloved Virginia journalists were shot and killed Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire in a shocking moment caught on live television.

Reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, worked for Roanoke-based news station WDBJ and were broadcasting from Smith Mountain Lake in the community of Moneta when multiple gunshots rang out around 6:45 a.m. Parker screamed and ducked before the camera turned off. Parker and Ward both died at the scene. Vicki Gardner, the executive director of the local Chamber of Commerce who Parker was interviewing at the time, was struck in the back and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery at a local hospital.

Police say the gunman was 41-year-old Vester Lee Flanagan, a former WDBJ reporter who went by “Bryce Williams” on air. Flanagan fled the scene, and law enforcement ultimately caught up to him at around 11:30 a.m., when his vehicle went off the highway and crashed. Officials found Flanagan suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, but died of his injuries at around 1:30 p.m.

While Flanagan was running from the police, video footage of the attacks from the point of view of the shooter were posted to social media accounts bearing the name Bryce Williams. Tweets sent from the Williams account accused Parker of being “racist” and complained that Ward had once “sent [him] to HR.” Twitter and Facebook suspended the accounts involved.

Parker and Ward, both Virginia natives, were loved and respect by their colleagues and often worked together as a team on assignments.

“They were special people. They’d brighten up a room every morning,” anchor Kim McBroom said in a broadcast following the attack.

Parker "took on the morning live reporting job with great excitement and vigor" and Ward "was universally loved," WDBJ general manager Jeff Marks  told The Associated Press.

“My grief is unbearable,” Parker's father told The Washington Post. “Is this real? Am I going to wake up? I am crying my eyes out. I don’t know if there’s anybody in this world or another father who could be more proud of their daughter.”

Shortly after the shooting, WDBJ anchor Chris Hurst revealed on social media that he and Parker had been in a relationship for months and were “very much in love.” He described her as “the most radiant woman I had ever met” and that they had talked about getting married.

Ward had announced his own engagement to WDBJ morning producer Melissa Ott months ago. Ott was in the station’s control room during the shooting and  saw it happen live.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) called for stricter gun laws in the wake of the shooting, restating his support for background checks. He made the statement when asked during an online Q&A session whether he would call for tougher gun control as a result of the incident.

It's my dream goal to get on that show

One of the reasons that it is used is to ensure that people who may be following the conversation know where the thread was moved to, and don't just think the mods deleted it.

I try to only use it for a contentious or hot thread.
Those were my thoughts as well. I just don't see the reason for it for a newly birthed thread or one that has two or three replies or one that someone accidentally made in the wrong board.

The default option is to display the "Thread moved" lock thing. I'll see if Cheat can swap the options.

News / Re: New Monitors
« on: August 25, 2015, 10:35:45 PM »
This supposed circle-jerk played no role in our choosing of new monitors. We picked the two candidates that we felt have, and will, best represent our community and help to sustain it's longevity. In the event that they fail to do so, we will reevaluate our choice and consider other candidates who posted in the thread.

If you are looking for some conspiracy, there isn't one.

I'm just saying I think popularity among the staff played more a factor than you guys like to admit.

We made the decision that we felt would best help the site at this time. We don't need moderators, we sought out friendly faces of the community.

verb had like 50 nominations though

several people had more nominations than the people you chose

The staff didn't base their choice off of who had the most nominations. That thread wasn't a vote for who would be monitor, just a way to gauge an idea of who would be interested.
the community doesn't always just voice their choices based off popularity. A lot of times its simply just who would be best for the job. I think the missed opportunity here was diversifying the staff and choosing people that weren't part of the hierarchical circlejerk of the site.

If you're talking about Verb, he got quite a bit of support during the staff discussions, including my own. We simply are looking to see if his turnaround keeps itself up before we suddenly give him a position of power. Assuming he does keep it up, he'll be considered in the time that we need more staff.

If you're talking about others, multiple people were discussed in the discussions. We kept an open mind.

This is a ruse, right?

No.
So.... we pick the guy who left for weeks then came back to only memepost and go "rood"?
Whilst that was considered, what outweighed that was Kupo being a part of the community for a long time prior to that (Bnet as well as septagon from the early days) Taking a break from the forums in the grand scheme of things isn't something that invalidates someone as a candidate (especially seeing as how a good chunk of the staff have died/vanished for longer than that at a time) <.<
Focnr never dies

He's just watching us all from behind that creepy clown painting.
Focnr's no longer on staff. I know the staff thread probably needs updating, but he's been gone for a while.

After taking into consideration all of the applications sent in, the staff has chosen our next two Monitors - Kupo and Kitsune. We want to thank everyone who did apply, and your interest will be stored for future use if needed.

Feel free to post your congratulations and such here, if you wish.

this wouldn't be a problem if we could block individual avatars, tbh

what do you guys think of that
i'd be in goddamn full acceptance of that

everyone wins

That's just silly and you know it.

How? We already have a similar option with Anarchy
I'm not opposed to allowing them if they're hidden to guests by default and can be enabled
then just do that ffs

It requires a different script, and there are other priorities first.

You mean the anonymous posting image, right?  I've only attended 3 anarchy weekends.

There's currently a script with Anarchy that allows users to have a separate avatar for that forum, and it can be anything within Anarchy's rules (No loli, etc). If someone in anarchy doesn't want to see those Anarchy avatars, they can turn the option off and will only see the global one.
I thought cheat never got that working...

The one script applied to Anarchy doesn't work without modification. There are similar ones available though
