The Flood / Useless Advice
« on: August 12, 2020, 04:32:43 AM »
What better way to waste your time than with a good old-fashioned forum game? The premise is simple: request help for a problem you may have, and get a dose of useless nonsense in return.

I want to replace the carburetor in my boat of a sedan with a fuel injection system. How should I go about it?

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot
Pretty good song! But I'll never be able to dissociate it from my repeated disappointments after finding copies of 'Wreck of the Old 97' by Vernon Dalhart along with a bunch of other dated pop records when I'm digging for 78s.

I think you may want to consider taking a hard look at where you're going in life if you feel the need to talk about your use of Reddit on another site, and how you post enough on a board focused on "anime memes" enough to actually get banned.

Business is slow. It's a great buyer's market, but collectors aren't paying what they did. No matter. I didn't plan on being a 78rpm record dealer all my life anyhow. I'll find more steady work when I move.

I miss my XBOX console. The Duke controller may have sucked, but I was there for Master Chief when he needed a weapon and he was there for me through lonely times. The atmosphere in that game influences a lot of my sci-fi writing to this day.

The first game was amongst my first introductions to RPG titles and a nostalgic favorite that I've beat several times. The second game is ranking amongst my all-time favorite video games, as a restored version of II has some of the most satisfyingly well-written and atmospheric sequences, stories, and characters in any video game I've played. These games are why I have lengthily opinions on morality in Star Wars (help).

Have any of you felt the power of third person turn-based combat?

The last film I saw in theatres was a war film from the Byelorussian SSR called Come and See (1985). I went all the way to SF to see it because it had a recent remaster and was being shown again in the US since I think 1987. I had to go because it's an all-time favorite of mine (no. 2 behind Once Upon a Time in America). I'm glad I got the opportunity to go before quarantine.

My god, those cornet solos after 1:48!

I love how the cover of that reissue album says it was remastered from the "original" analog tapes. Remasters of remasters, lmao

Here's my copy!
Spoiler

Fun fact: Benny Meroff had nothing to do with this recording - it was just another Trumbauer-led band. A marketing decision.

I watched Night of the Hunter again, today. Such a thrill, so many rich characters, and a favorite of favorites; with an actress who shares a 1/2 spot at the tippy-top of my personal list for best actors. Lillian Gish bears proof once again that you can have a capable, strong heroine without stripping her of her femininity in the slightest. I wish my own mother loved me so much.

I guess I'm the FNG.

I didn't really plan on staying, but honestly, it's nice to have a few places in my options that are small and easy to tuck into when I'm bored. Most of the people here seem galactically autistic, but so am I, so I'm hoping to fit in well enough to keep posting.
You seem pretty chill, I'm glad you decided to stay.
I appreciate the welcome. Thank you.

relistening to some of the better april '95 albums for the '95 project

YouTube

Not bad. Can't remember the last time I heard false starts make it onto the final cut of a song.

In the spirit of that, however, I thought of an unissued take of Thou Swell owned by a friend of mine (the lucky bastard). Also from an April - that of 1928. It's the only recorded example of Bix Beiderbecke's voice. "Take it [from] the last four."

I personally like it better than the issued take. It's soulfully improvised and so I find it much livelier. Not so clean.

This is 2.0, what you're talking about is 3.0
It might as well be 1.0 in this day and age. You can hardly blame him for being mistaken.

I remember finishing Cowboy Bebop and Trigun and then never getting back into anime.
was that because you didn't like them
If I didn't like them, I wouldn't have finished them.
right haha yeah that makes sense

Spoiler
>has 150 finished shows that i've rated a 1/10 on MAL

but why
i'm also just really weird
I know the feeling.
anyway, i meant to ask why you never got back into it if you liked what you saw
Because my older brother who actually lived through the 1990's saw them amongst a lot of others that were contemporary to his youth, and he in turn showed them to me when I was very young. It was the age of DVDs and I had no other immediate source of info, so I moved on.

I didn't have good access to the internet for a long time. I've always loved consuming information, and I was reading history almanacs and books on historical cultures in place of the computer. When I finally got access to one, I was hooked on Wikipedia and other info sites because that's what entertained me. A lot of my musical, film, and tastes on entertainment in general stemmed from historical/cultural fixations and games I'd played. In other words, I drifted into my own niche.

That said, I do have a soft spot for anime and I'll give it a go every now and again. Maybe I just need a good nudge. Who knows.

The Flood / Re: Can Class Get Banned Already

Let's take a step back and think for a moment. Why do these threads exist, and moreover, why are they perpetuated?

By now, you guys are having the same conversation to the point that it's blasting a stripped groove. The music is gone, and everything that's had to be said has been said. It's not up to any of us whether she listens; it's all on her. As much as there's an urge to feed into this and keep replying - a trap I myself have fallen into - it doesn't do you any good in the end. It strengthens an attention-seeking behavior that can largely be quelled by not giving it attention.

I don't care either way, but if you folks really want her gone, you can't keep giving her a reason to stay. You can think of the posts like you would forum adbots that litter sites with badmins who don't IP clean and fuck off for time eternal. There's nothing you can do but ignore it, and if you do it enough, it will become nothing to you.
