The island of Ireland should be geopolitically whole again. Preferably not violently, so Brexit has been a perfect lubricant for this discussion.

Northern Irish Unionists/"West Brits" are straight up awful.
Why doesn't North Ireland want to become part of Ireland?
After the civil war, to end the bloodshed it was agreed to end it on one condition. North counties stay a part of England.

And that was bargained for because a majority of the population there descend from the Ulster Planteers (Plantaters...? English/Scots Protestants). With RoI being majority Catholic and with religious ideals being held very closely by both sides before the modern day (and to some extent, still today), tensions rose and conflict has been banging around ever since, until 1997/98, when the Good Friday Agreement came in and the IRA decommissioned.

Unfortunately that area still has religious tensions because it became closely intertwined with nationality and ownership of Ulster (and today, the remaining 6 counties under UK control). Long story short;

NI Protestant = Consider themselves British, living in a part of the UK off the mainland.
NI Catholic = Consider themselves Irish, living in a part of Ireland that is controlled by another country.

This has led to gerrymandering, literally forking Catholics out of one Protestant-controlled street and into a Catholic one and vice versa which creates strongholds for either camp, A Bloody Sunday or two (1920,1972), and the odd Trouble.

It's still a hotly debated topic, and this recent poll* in December 2017 showed that only a marginal majority of NI residents would support re-uniting with the Republic should a "No-Deal" scenario occur, and guess which religious group sided with re-unification...?

W@W Veteran was the most difficult I've played simply by ramping up the damage output, recruiting soldiers that were perfect pitchers and giving each of them a crate of grenades.

Coupled with the level-loadouts of enemies and certain scenarios requiring you to push to a point otherwise the enemies won't stop respawning, levels like Blowtorch & Corkscrew were infamous in their difficulty. You couldn't advance more than a few feet before a jap-in-a-box popped out of a floor trap, shot you with a high powered bolt action rifle, whilst simultaneously throwing a pre-cooked grenade at your feet. I gave up on this level on Veteran for months after I got shot to near-death and died by being bonked on the head with a grenade being thrown at me.

The final level, Downfall just spawned enemies at you until you pushed up enough, which was nigh impossible without sprinting forward, cowering in a corner and spraying at anyone nearby until your retarded AI came forward to end the respawning script for that area. Oh, and fighting in the Reichstag where desperate Nazis would start firing RPG's at you with massive OHK splash damage. You just had to time your own soviet-ally respawner to send a wave ahead to get rocketed, so you could sprint out and shoot them all whilst reloading and then get back to cover before everything else focused on you.

Metro 2033 and LL was by far the easiest Hard difficulties I've played. Ammo and air-time for going above ground are far more scarce, as is the currency which are just better bullets, so you have to actually take into account do you want a lot of bullets to kill enemies but with scavenged guns rather than paid ones, or do you want to save bullets and go stealthy to save up money for stealth attachments or throwing knives, etc. Since much of the game can be done without killing anyone (and even some levels not killing the mutant animals too), it's far easier to do a "stealthy hard mode" than a "guns blazing, kill everything - hard mode" While the latter had weaker enemies because all bullets kill, enemies would react faster and conglomerate on your position better, making it a lot more difficult to fight out.

The ultimate hard mode for the game made it more immersive too, by just removing the HUD entirely. From intro to end, you have to remember the control scheme (negligible if you've played enough recently ), second guess your ammo supply ("Is this my last mag/grenade, or my second last?"), and count off your airtime with a watch on your arm that beeps when you only have to change filters for your mask, which is now a manual-operation only (failure to do so results in you pulling off your mask and dying if you don't replace it in 10 seconds). This also included the odd quicklime event if a mutant leapt onto you, or you had to stab some ambusher, which fortunately was just the knife button.

Personally I found Heart of the Reich harder. Destroying those 4 AA guns was hell.
Oh shit, is that the one where you charge to the reichstag but not in it? I kinda merged them both into one.

Serious / Re: being offended "for" people
« on: January 18, 2018, 11:44:52 PM »
It comes off as condescending personally.

"The poor [black/asian/jewish/disabled/LGBT] people, they haven't come to defend themselves against this horrid comment on Twitter/Facebook/[social media site that exposes everyone to everything anyone said on it], don't worry, completely unknown faceless and masses of assumed offended [minority], I'll tell them off".

It assumes that i) There is an actual offence caused to someone or some group, which may not always be the case (more not than often, because generalising the offence of one person to an entire group is bad), and ii) That said assumed offended group can't defend themselves against it, when the wonders of social media and the internet means everyone will see it, can promptly ignore it, or tut-tut the thing.

And just like white-knighting, it's about as effective. People don't exactly respond well to being told off and most rational non-racist/homophobic/ableist/whatevers are just gonna read it and think "Come the fuck on" like it's preaching to the choir.

But this kinda skirts your question and deals with the latter part;
At what point does having empathy for other human beings become a case of being offended "for" said target.

I dunno if there is "a point". You could say nothing to the post or statement and instead protest for equality and legal rights, donate to a charity for said minority, do some volunteering work for the said group that were targetted, something a bit more valuable than acting holier-than-thou and getting offended on behalf of someone else who may or may not exist. Let them say they're offended by it, because there's always the off chance the target doesn't give a flying fuck, or thinks it's hilarious.

Then finally, there's the whole uselessness of being offended - great. So what? I'll let Steve Hughes explain that.
YouTube

He's a comedian, granted, but it feeds back. Offence is subjective, what I'm being offended for on behalf of an assumed group may not be offensive at all to others, maybe even that assumed group I'm "defending".

It's nearly 6am so I'll likely have to go back through this to make it more coherent, but eh.

Orthodontist advised I have two teeth removed off the top row and then have braces to realign everything, one from behind the canines.

Dentist did the job over two operations which was basically a numbing injection and a pair of plyers. 2nd op went bad, crown came off but left the root in place. Immense pain after the numbness wore off for two days.

Orthodontist did x-rays and was like "Eh, just put braces on anyway and see if it aligns them"

4 years later, one gap is closed, another is as wide as when they removed it. I have a feeling the root isn't mentioned in my dental records, as all they've been focusing on recently is closing it with braces... not gonna happen. Will mention it next time I'm down there.

Oh and my favourite part that I just remembered;
"Hey Orthodontist, when can I get these braces out?"
"Eh, around 18 months, ask your dentist"
"Hey Dentist, when can I get these braces out?"
"We don't deal with that stuff here, ask your orthodontist"

Real reason though, because it's not working atm - the only current places that do are fairly crap ('cept maybe Cuba, but is that still communist?) and trying to have lone communist ideals in a capitalist country makes no rational sense.

cuba is very much a socialist nation still

Sooo... not communist then. Probably why Cuba looks at least somewhat appealing.
uh, no. their modern nation has its roots in a proletarian revolution which was characterized by marxist-leninist style communist ideology. it's a communist nation which is currently in the socialist stage of history.

So Socialism is the natural progression of Communism?

Serious question. I'm no idealogical buff but I didn't think that was how it worked.

Railway Rifled a guy to a fridge full of purified water that he was fighting over in Fallout 3 (one of the random encounters).

Railway'd, as in pinned every limb to the fridge in some semblance of order.

Summers and Winters are marginally warmer, Winter frost has been replaced by rain which has extended the local flooding to two seasons where I live.

The extended rainfall has also caused the soils to be more saturated, which has led to increased ground subsidence, land-creep, and landslides. A few years ago, someone's back garden collapsed into the river, and cracks are developing in my house as it slowly moves.

ISIS don't upload to Youtube and target their audience towards children/cringy teens, AFAIK

Same sorta controversy as when Pdp said something about Jews in his stream, because Youtube can't have its major ad-revenue generator getting kids brainwashed to beleive bad things and get parents boycotting YT and actually parenting their kids.

And finally, when something offensive is chucked into the mainstream, you just know someone's gonna become offended by it and repost their outrage on twitter or somewhere.

Jokes aside though, sea creatures in general like Arthropods are fucking boss.

Horseshoe crabs are on of the oldest animals still around (450Ma) and part of one of the earliest recorded species of animals that is in the fossil record (Arthro's, 800Ma).

My grandmother has one hanging on her wall, from somewhere.

Hungarian housemate had a funny story, tho I'm fairly certain I've said it before. I still have no idea why he decided to tell my house, and our extended friend group later on, but eh.

Started off as a standard one night stand in Budapest, and Ish loved himself a bit of ass. He asked if she would bend over so he could get on with the task at hand, and went to work (He went on to brag how tight/great it was, but I'll skip that part)...

Until it wasn't great anymore. Ish was pumping away in the dark on the bed, and then he felt something warm and slimey run down his leg. It started smelling too, but he only figured out what it was when he touched whatever it was (still, pumping away however, girl oblivious or ignoring it). You've likely already guessed what it was.

From here, he stood at a crossroads in his mind, bent over a woman from behind. "Stop, and make her embarrassed and self-conscious... or keep going"

At this point in the story, he grinned like a rascal admiring his mischief and said;
"I kept going"

He hollers into laughter as everyone in his small gathered audience sours their already grim looks.

News Year's Eve I drank and socialised.

Today I just binged on leftovers and selection boxes because my mum has been trying to empty the freezer this past week by roasting everything.

Was gonna go out with my 35mm and take some pictures of the estuary but it's been pissing it down most of the day and now it's too dark.

To an extent.

Most of us read about the SWAT guy playing a lethal game of simon says with a drunk pest control man in a hotel recently. That guy hardly posed a threat crawling with his hands in the air, and yet the SWAT guy shot him for failing to follow his EXACT instructions/pulling up his trousers.

If/once law enforcement isn't in clear danger from the allegded assailant, you can't just order them to do the hokey-kokey and if they
fail, they die. That's retarded, and promotes a negative image of the police that are supposed to be for your benefit, not dread once you get pulled over/searched/a visit from... then again, it's already too late as that has circulated already.

PS4 took me a full hour to download and install a 1GB Bloodborne update. On the Xbox One, I just downloaded and installed a full 800 MB system update in 15 minutes and am now wrapping up a 6 GB Shadow of War update at 5MB/s in under 20 minutes. What is this? Does the PS4 just suck when it comes to downloading like the PS3 did or is there something else going on here?
it's probably you

multi-gig updates take no more than 10-20 minutes for me on ps4, and my internet is decent at best
Strange. It doesn't seem to be just me though. A quick google search gives me several results on how the Xbox network speed and downloads are supposedly faster than the PS4. But yeah, it is surprising that the PS4 was that slow so there probably was some kind of issue. I'll report back next time I download something on it. :/

https://www.polygon.com/2016/12/15/13967690/xbox-one-system-update-download-speeds
yeah it's probably just you
ps4 download machine broke :(
According to some rigorous testing, it's because the PS4's receive window is proportionally smaller compared to that of whatever your bandwidth speeds are, like a truck delivering packages to a warehouse but to pass them through a doorway at the end. Using a local proxy setup for your PS4 to use while downloading can remedy the issue like so (Source1);
Spoiler

It can also be a result of being shunted onto a slower server which isn't the most optimal for you, which can be also remedied by finding out which server gives you the best speeds, and forcing your local proxy going ONLY through that server to download. This has a disadvantage as if the server turns off, the proxy won't automatically swap over and you now have no download unless you input manually the next best server address (Source2).

Sources, with a TON of useful technical information, testing methodology, and the suggested workaround:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/522ttn/ps4_downloads_are_notoriously_slow_i_might_have/
https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/5drvcc/an_update_on_psn_download_speeds/

Personally, I have found I get faster download speeds by putting it in sleep mode whilst downloading - this has the obvious drawback of not being able to play it, however.

TLDR; yeah it's totally a you-problem. Not a firmware or PSN serverside problem at all.
