Paintball isn't really "hardcore", sure the balls hurt a bit more, but airsoft feels more realistic and is cheaper.
paintball IS fun however, I think airsoft is ultimately superior.
plus you can get by with a pair of safety glasses in airsoft, paintball you basically have to use a mask.
Airsoft flies off your jacket. Paintball will break your bloody skin.

the point isn't actually to hurt each other, it's to simulate combat while also having fun.
I don't think paintball and Airsoft is meant for playing soldier. I find objective based games to be more fun. And getting hurt makes it more fun
