Space exploration isn't really practical in the first place.
Chances are, humanity will remain earthbound for the rest of its existence because there's little economic reason for going past Low Earth Orbit. Sure, there are prospects of asteroid mining or other profit-driven endeavors that should eventually pay off, but the initial costs are far too great for anyone to actually risk it. Space technology also pays great dividends when eventually adapted to consumer form, but that can be done separately, and the military does the same job anyway.
Ultimately, you have to understand that most of these missions and studies are done for ideological reasons--the desire to explore, the thirst for knowledge. And that's okay; ideals are perfectly reasonable motivators, especially the noble ones. We sink plenty of money into ideals every day. But when you try to think of things from a purely practical or economic standpoint, things begin to fall apart (unless you're involved in a cold war and want to show off your missiles).
Right now, NASA is mainly focusing on planetary science--the study of planets and their formation. If you're a planetary scientist looking to learn more, Jupiter is a pretty good target. It seems to be one of the first planets to have formed, and we've still got quite a few questions about its internal composition.
