Along with the glorified door-opening and the damsel-like aspects, female sidekicks are there to make players feel better about themselves, to make them feel important and skilled. This is just undermining the games story, like its the point of the whole thing or something. And anyone who has played RE4 would have rather left her in that goddamned room. But these interactions are rarely depicted as mutually supportive. It is mutually supportive in RE4
