The Flood / Re: Kendrick
« on: April 15, 2017, 08:49:09 AM »
Huh, I know nothing about rappers so this is news to me.
As a kid my older brother tried getting me into rap and I didn't much like him. By extension I kind of stayed away from rap. I don't really find it appealing because most of what people have shown me is a.) artists self-aggrandizing which falls into subcategories of: a.) Enumerating sexual encounters or b.) Talking about money and violence. I don't really care for these things in music. I have heard rap I like, but no artists have stood out to me yet.

These complaints are somewhat reminiscent of your gripes with anime, lol.

Spoiler
Also the lag in the game music thread is really bad on my surface so I won't bother, but I was going to say "no love for Fairy Queen?" and "I think my favorite rendition of the Great Fairy Fountain is from Twilight Princess."
all you needed to do was reply one more time in that thread, and my response would've made a new page
reeeeeeeeeeeee

Anyways, yeah--I understand your gripes with hip hop as a genre, and I felt the same exact way until a few years ago, when I discovered that not ALL rappers just rap about money & hoes.

Kendrick in particular is what you'd call a "conscious rapper." He pretty much raps about anything that's on his mind, and often, it'll be laced with social or sometimes political commentary. His pet subjects include detailed anecdotes of his street life, the pros and cons of being famous, and appraisals of black culture in American society.

If he ever raps about violence, it's always in condemnation of it. If he raps about excess, it's always in a negative light. He always comes across as honest, and utilizes his artistry to paint a gritty, bona fide picture of reality in his verses.

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City is the album that shot him through the roof in terms of mainstream popularity, but the dark themes expressed within prevented it from being placed on the same shelf as, say, a Lil Wayne record. It's an autobiographical concept album exploring Kendrick's life as he was growing up on the streets of Compton, and all the ups and downs (mostly downs) that came with it.

It helps to understand, too, that Compton is the city that gave birth to a wide swath of important and influential hip hop artists--particularly N.W.A. (Ice Cube, Dr. Dre...)

There are songs on this album that cover mildly seedy subjects which may not appeal to you at face value, but I can assure you that they all play into the record's narrative and Kendrick himself does not condone any of it. He's just telling you his story, and from that, you can glean a number of positive messages to take away from it.

The production and beats are also super hot fire--that much can be said for certain. This is my favorite track off that record:

YouTube

"It go Halle Berry or hallelujah
Pick your poison, tell me what you doin'
Everybody gon' respect the shooter,
But the one in front of the gun lives forever."

Then he dropped To Pimp a Butterfly, which, two years after its release, has cemented itself as a modern-day masterpiece. It is the most important hip hop record of the decade. Not only has the production value been tenfolded, featuring a lot of jazzy, soul-inspired instrumentals and guest appearances by a wide menagerie of iconic artists, Kendrick's lyricism and artistry are just taken to the next level.

This might be controversial, but I think it also has the greatest opening track to an album... perhaps ever:

YouTube

I could talk about TPAB for paragraphs and paragraphs, but I'd just end up spoiling it. You could listen to either of these albums, because I highly recommend both. And then of course there's Damn, his new album that dropped last night, which wouldn't be a bad listen either--though I haven't fully digested it yet.

And even if you don't like them, that's cool--the important thing to understand here is that hip hop is a lot more than its mere stereotypes. Fortunately, Kendrick isn't the only conscious rapper out there. I could recommend you several more.

I think TPAB was an awful album, it had one gem "Alright" which also summed up the whole album's message. But I do understand why it is seen as an important album because of the timing. I just felt it was more commentary then music, and mostly unrelatable.

Damn. Is a much better piece of work in my opinion because the narrative and its elements are relatable in a certain sense and it has a religious undertone that holds it together. It's a good album. And I think it's miles above TPAB.

I've been called racist for not like TPAB, which should show how influential it is.

Not really a Kendrick fan but it's a crazy good album.

Can't wait for the second album on Sunday. Idk if you've heard about that.

Listened to it late last night for the first time, and really listened this morning on my drive to class and back.

This is what he said to me, I assume from the same thread.

Spoiler
I watch a fair bit of stuff on here but never really am inclined to jump into things. There's some old debacle, basically ancient history on your supposed wealth or possessions. I never cared to jump into that and I never cared to judge.

I think you're mostly legitimate. Not in the sense of your wealth, but in the sense of your happiness. I get the feeling that you lead something of a life that's fulfilling or content. But you're looking for something that's missing, maybe.

The need to realize that you're a decent person. Or the want to act better with what you've got. It's not a bad thing, to see what you have but at the same time try and help other folks around you. It's a shame that your enthusiasm here is so often mistaken for something else.

But none the less it's still there. Which it should be. Keep that lighter than air sense about you. And keep doing stuff for folks, even if it's small. They're good things to pursue matey.

Since I'm leaving I thought id share my thoughts about you.

First off, sorry everyone avoids your posts lol. A lot of people ride you because you write so much, but shit, I read them and your wise. That's something I can respect.

You stick to who you are, even through all the shit you've been going through. Your a tough son of a bitch. A true embodiment of a Brute haha.

I hope you recover and all things works out on your end. Truly do.

Be well brother

I'll take that heart. I will try, at the very least. Best of luck out there too. Maybe at some point you can show up back here after a vacation of sorts. But until then, take care out there.

There's a lot of ugly things out there no matter where you look, no matter where you go. Keep your head up and just generally, try to be a decent person.

I wish you luck friend.

This was the message I sent him when I took a break from the site. I only sent them to handful of people, some I cared about, and some I just wanted to level with.

I had been pm'ing him for updates since the website started, every couple of months. Just hoping things would turn.

I remember going out of my way to try and contact him just to ask how he was doing. But I was too nervous to do it.

I'll forever regret that.

I am a little teary eyed, I never expected that. I genuinely liked Sandtrap, I always enjoyed reading what he had to say and a lot of times what he had to say had weight. It had value because there was always genuine thought behind his words. He was damn wise, and god damn one of the nicest people I have ever interacted with on the Internet.

Shit at times he even stood up for me. I've never experienced a death of someone I've known for almost a decade on the Internet. Almost a decade ago I first saw his username, or rather I met him through his posts. And now it's a strange feeling to know he's gone.

He struggled, he hurt, he went through a lot. Yet he never broke, never snapped, and always treated everyone with respect and was always level headed. I god damn respect the guy. I always will.

I know what I feel is real, and to me that shows that he did have a genuine impact on me. And for that I'm very grateful.

Rest in Peace, atleast I know you are in a place where the pain no longer brings you down.

I'm actually crying, damn.

Gaming / Re: Mass Effect Andromeda
« on: April 04, 2017, 01:11:18 AM »
The environments are so god damn beautiful though. If there is one thing they nailed it's the planets. They are so believable.

The derelict on Elaaden actually feels so massive, the scale is something I've never experienced in a game. From far away I was like its not that big, but as I drove closer and closer I was like holy shit.

Havaarl gives me headaches but it's very pretty, the lighting kills me though, too dark for my brain.

Aya is just incredible. Voeld I haven't spent much time on, Eos not crazy about, but still not ugly.

Even the Turian planet, asteroid thing, is pretty fucking sweet.

I wish they would do a prequel with Shepard in the first contact war, so you can still have a sense of exploration in the Milky Way. Not even Shepard honestly, anyone. It would be cool to see how things were before the council stepped in and early stages with the council.

Mass Effect still has incredible potential, and I think Andromeda sets itself up for a great sequel, because there's so many possibilities. The writing just needs to deliver.

honestly I had hopes Milky Way humans from AFTER the initiative would show up. You'd think we'd have found a much faster way to get to Andromeda in 600 years. I was hoping you'd run into them or something. They could have brought a new quantum communicator by that point. Shit we don't even know how damn advanced we are in the Milky Way. We could have surpassed the Protheans. Yet it's funny how we already did by the time the Initiative left, not even the Protheans spanned galaxies. And the Jaardan seem hyper advanced, but only in certain capacities.

But I'm confused. Are the Jaardan the civilization that are the Remnant, or are they the Remnant enemy who released the Scourge. It's something they never clarify, and it's really odd. They never delve into who the hell the Remnant are. Yet in ME 1 we knew who the Protheans were, quickly too.

Also keep in mind this is one cluster in galaxy substantially larger then the Milky Way.

So they have an unreal amount of space to play with.

I'm definently hooked on the direction and plot they set up. And I liked Ryder much more then I expected, same with the crew.

Really enjoyed the game. But it has it flaws, but because of those flaws it had the charm of ME 1.

I'll probably do a review. Story was lackluster in all honesty, but it set itself up. I saw every plot twist coming

« on: February 01, 2017, 11:54:19 PM »
I play a game on the App Store called Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes. It's the only app I've ever spent money on in terms of microtransactions. And today while looking at my recent purchases on my account I realized I've spent a little over $250. That's insane. And I never really noticed.

It's actually pretty crazy, I was genuinely shocked. Not that I necessarily regret it, and it's not that big of a deal because of how long I've been playing it and how much content the game puts out, but it's just weird to put that money there instead of a full fledged game.

Granted it's a damn good game, but still.

What's the most you've ever spent in a game outside of the base cost and DLC (actual micros)?

The Flood / Re: Do you see yourself as an SJW, feminist or creationist?
« on: January 16, 2017, 09:39:08 PM »
I consider myself a creationist in that I do believe in God. However what i belive isnt technicaly "creationism" as it's defined. I still subscribe to the accepted scientific explanation for the universe's development and evolution and these scientific processes are God's tools so to speak. And that the seven days of creation are not exactly literal "days" as we know them.

I believe that's the common way of looking at it. The Big Bang, etc. are all methods in which God created everything. And I think it's the best. You don't deny anything and retain your belief.

No one can tell you how the Big Bang happened, so no one can say your wrong

The Flood / Re: Do you see yourself as an SJW, feminist or creationist?
« on: January 16, 2017, 09:35:55 PM »
Maybe a feminist/SJW. I believe in treating women well, and treating them as equals, however it's simply that as equals. Yes I have some beliefs that infringe on that, but honestly if your a decent human being you typically have values that coincide with SJW's and Feminists. Reasonable values, not stupid and ridiculous ones.

Not a creationist. However I do still believe God created existence as a whole, just not the whole bible story.
