I can't into words, but it sounds dumb to start taking a bunch of artificial sugar just because you can't take as much real sugar anymore.
Yeah, to some extent I think we've gone too far with being used to sweet and fatty foods, and I think everyone would benefit from making their diet less reliant on sweeteners, but replacing 300 calories of pure sugar in a widely available soft drink with a fairly decent, zero calorie substitute seems like a middle ground. Kind of like banning trans fats and stuff like that.
As someone who pays next to no attention to what I am eating, I thought this was something really only relevant(not saying it should be completely ignored otherwise) to diabetes patients? Also, diet soda always tastes worse than high fructose corn syrup or actual sugar, so how does it taste even sweeter than either?

Seeing as heart disease caused by excessive sugars and fats in our diet is the leading cause of death in the U.S., one probably wouldn't question too hard the use of a proven harmless substance. Aspartame use is arguably a more thoroughly researched science than GMOs at this point. It is literally just a basic composition of two amino acids that break down exactly the same way as protein, and is 200 times sweeter than sugar.
