Yesterday I found a CD player and speakers, 50 CDs, Jak X, an original Xbox, and VHS copies of Saving Private Ryan, Scarface, all 3 Godfather movies, Jaws, Spider-man, X-men, The Matrix and Jurassic Park. My total was something like $53. A fucking steal.

People put humongous amounts of time and effort into conducting research. They're not awful people for wanting to get rewarded for their work. The breakthrough itself is the reward. Get it through your thick skull.
They can also value whatever they want because you can't force people to value things that you think they should value. Scientists are human beings like everyone else with lives outside their work that they probably value over it.
That makes them pieces of shit. Just like everybody else who values "whatever they want" over their contributions to humanity.
To some it may be the reward. However, to others it may be what they can do with the breakthrough or the monetary reward for the discovery. We don't live in a world where everything is perfect and everyone cares for one another. All attempts to create such a world have failed miserably (e.g., Maoist China, Cambodia, USSR).
