The Flood / Has the site been slowing down for anyone else?
« on: August 02, 2014, 11:21:48 PM »
It seems like every few minutes the site will slow down and pretty much stop working for a couple minutes. Other websites seem to run just fine when this site slows down, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one getting this issue.

Am I?

The Flood / Do you think Zombies are realistic?
« on: August 02, 2014, 11:14:12 PM »
In zombie TV series and movies I've seen, they explain that after a person dies and their systems shut down the virus restarts the brain and the person reawakes. What usually doesn't make sense is how they function with damaged organs. You'd have to assume that the virus would have to perform the function of extracting nutrients, collecting oxygen, and removing waste rather than utilizing the person's damaged organs. That would make for a very complicated virus (it could potentially require multiple cells to work). Needless to say, it would be very unlikely that it would adapt like that naturally. But I also don't see why a virus like that would be engineered like that either. If someone wanted to kill everyone with a virus, they wouldn't bother turning people into zombies, they would just have the virus kill people slowly in an undetectable way so that the virus could easily spread. Although I guess that scenario doesn't work because people would quarantine the infected, so you'd need a force to attack non-infected. So maybe turning people into zombies would be necessary after all. But then you're stuck with the problem of how zombies could even defeat a military force. I've always seen that as a huge plot hole in zombie apocalypse movies and TV series. So you'd need the virus to spread fast and undetected but rather than killing them, you would have them turn into zombies. That way, you can kill off the last of the population that have isolated themselves from the virus.

Okay, that's enough babbling. Anyway, do you see zombies as anything realistic or not?

From the article itself.  "Shawyer's engine is extremely light and simple." They wouldn't drop that line in the article for no reason. Simplicity implies that by current standards, the concept of the engine is simple to understand, and therefore simple to reproduce. Hell, you can create plasma in your microwave by microwaving fire. Don't do that though.

And don't give me that it's economical stuff either. The fuel economy for a lot of vehicles today is rather poor. Big companies don't care if it's economical, they care about how much money they can generate. And poor economical vehicles is one avenue of income. And it's like a big board game to them. If and when that engine gets off the ground, it won't be released until everybody is good and ready. It won't ever be buried completely, but it'll be kept in a waiting line until they can make the maximum amount of profit while losing as little as possible.
Simple doesn't mean cheap. That's a false assumption. But it's best to stop arguing over what it would cost when neither of us have that information available to us.

Being economical means making a profit. A company absolutely cares if it's making a profit. You're right, gas guzzling cars sell because they're popular. It's cheap to produce for the company, but the customer will pay a heavy cost to maintain it. If NASA wants to get into space, they're going to try and cut costs wherever they can. If an engine requires no fuel (the biggest cost factor) then they would probably use it (so long as it's just as safe and powerful).

The limit is the amount of energy you use to increase the thrust force. As far as I know, when something is flying through space, it doesn't just simply speed up out of the blue. Over time, I believe there is a gradual increase, but this is extremely slow. In order to go faster, an object needs more of an opposing force to push it along. But as long as an object keeps going without being disturbed, it will keep going.

So, really, we're still at the same level here. In order to make a satellite go any faster with this engine, assuming it works, you'd need a power plant on board. And if there's a power plant, there's a limit to how much electricity it can generate, effectively capping the speed of the satellite.

Of course, this could be overcome by something else. Giving the satellite an enormous burst of power at launch. And the only way to do that would be to hook it up to a space elevator and launch it from the very top, so that you wouldn't have to fight gravity so hard and the boost from having all the power dumped into the engine wouldn't be wasted.
If you continue to increase force, you accelerate. And the experimental engine used solar power. You need a large battery if you were to go far away enough from the Sun. You wouldn't need a powerplant, that's a bit ridiculous.

Maybe he cares about how we think of him. He cares so much that even knowing that we actually don't care about him doesn't stop him from trying.

I could tell it was a troll post but fact is a lot of people hold that mentality. So I replied anyway.
That's not much of a justification when you shouldn't reply to people who hold that mentality in the first place. You can only convince rational people of your opinions, but frankly, they already hold most of the same opinions. That's just one of the many reasons why discussing politics is pointless.
"anyone who disagrees with me he irrational"

this is why people don't like you, dustin.
I definitely don't claim to be rational or that I know much of anything. People who disagree with knowledgeable people like scientists and mathematicians are irrational. I'm just an average, uneducated American.

Our industry, as it stands today, aren't fans of game changers. They're comfortable currently as is. This is a thrust engine. That means it can be applied to to more than just satellites. Missiles, aircraft, maybe even ground transport. And it's cheap, light weight, and uses NO fuel other than electricity.

Come on, don't tell me you don't see why a big multinational company would want something like that buried or restricted. The fuel business is incredibly lucrative, and if that engine was ever streamlined, it could put a big damn dent in their profits or even outright kill them. If the engine ever gets off the ground, chances are one of the big corporations out there will purchase it. But they won't use it right away. They'll keep it in the backroom until they need it. So long as there is fuel to be sold, they'll sell it.

The number one rule any corporation in a capitalist system lives by is money. Make money, make more money, and spend as little as possible. They won't introduce the engine because it's practical or benificial. They'll introduce it when their current big well dries up, and it's time to move on.
Cheap and lightweight? According to whom? Powerful magnetic fields and superheated plasma don't sound cheap to me.

And no, I don't think corporations would try and bury it. The design is only owned by governments and educational institutions, no one has the ability to hide it. I'm sure there will be corporations who will pick up on the technology, and there will be corporations who cannot adapt who will lose profits. If it is economical, it's not going to be buried.

Lee Little has been using steroids for 25 years and has now been told his sperm count is zero.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast he says "It just isn't worth it for your health risks. People are taking insulin now to gain weight but you can go into a diabetic coma".

The director of the one of the country's biggest drug treatment centres says that steroid abuse is a 'ticking time-bomb'.

David Smallwood from the One40 clinic in London says more people than ever are taking steroids - and storing up enormous health problems for themselves as they do so.

Neat

a bit more than neat lol...... am I the only one excited??
Our current system doesn't like game changers, especially ones that are cheap, and can potentially provide the world with a relatively easy to manufacture propulsion system that could be implemented in any manner of craft.

So, assuming it gets past the scientists, it's going to get run into the ground by corporations and governments and buried, OR, kept exclusively to one specific branch while everybody else doesn't get access.
What are you on about?

Simply amazing. Great to hear stuff like this.

ikr, the space field needs a huge ass push like this
Fuelless transportation can be applied to much more than just space. Although that really depends on how practical it is to put an engine like this in a car or a plane. Magnetohydrodynamics really isn't my field of expertise, lol.

He sent me a PM saying IP bans don't work.
No shit, he spends every day making a new IP instead of living an actual life.
I suck at computer stuff, but can't IP changes be tracked?
They can be, yes, but he is changing IPs every time he gets banned.

I am working on a way to make it very inconvenient for him to keep doing it.
I mean isn't it going to leave a blimp on government radar when you change your IP that often?

I think this is probably a case of reporting news before the full story comes out. They'll have an explanation soon.

hopefully reporters aren't jumping to conclusions and these test are actually legit
The tests are probably legit. They're doing more to confirm anyway. It's still an amazing breakthrough and we'll know better about what it means in the future, but the laws of physics haven't been broken. That's part of media hype to this story.

NASA believes it has something to do with the "quantum vaccum virtual plasma," but I have no idea what the hell that is.

The Flood / Re: um.... holy shit?

The "laws of physics" is only limited to our current knowledge. If we say we can't do something because of current limitations then we'd never exceed our current limitations and build new ones. Back before the Wright Brothers people though flight was silly, illogical, and could never happened. If we everybody had thought that then flight may never been invented
The laws of physics haven't been disproven, that's just false reporting and you're biting.

Forbes because they have articles on topics that I have a hard time finding elsewhere.

But I've seen some cringey shit there. BBC is also starting to get a bit cringey. I get that science needs to be better communicated to the public, but I'm not sure if distorting it to make it more interesting is really the answer.

Inflation is bad. It decreases the value of the dollar and thus reduces what you can buy with it.
Yes but there would be more money. Right?
And it's not redistributing "wealth" by printing more, it's trying to save their asses and the government's asses.
Did you mean that literally or were you just dispersing emotions? The Fed creates more money which decreases everyone else's dollar value and the Fed ends up with a profit. The wealth is redistributed to them.
In fact a great majority of the money is actually created by PRIVATE banks, not the government
Is it actually significant that the Fed would contract private banks to print money? The majority of money they create is digital anyway. Or do you mean something else? And more importantly, what exactly makes your video a reliable source?

I'm trying not to discuss politics anymore; I'm only here because I'm interested in the functions of Fed.

Serious / Re: There is no free-market
« on: August 01, 2014, 04:41:31 AM »
That's why in school they tell us that we have a mixed economy. No where in the world is the market unrestricted.

On the topic of the Federal Reserve, I'm not entirely sure I would say that inflation is bad. My best understanding as an average citizen without any kind of degree in economics is that by printing more money they aren't actually creating wealth, they're just redistributing it. Everyone's dollar value shrinks a tiny bit and the Federal Reserve has their own lump of cash. The Fed then loans that money to private banks who can use it to make investments in projects which help run the economy. And if there comes another recession, people will always be able to cash out their money.

I'm inclined to believe that the Federal Reserve doesn't use that money for their own salaries. Private banks are another story, but if it's a loan it at least gets paid back. Or at least that would be the hope. Investments aren't always successful.

The only out of country place I've been to was Canada (last Summer), but I'm sure there are plenty of people here who haven't been out of country at all. Actually not to get offtopic, but this all of a sudden reminds me of this young boy I met at camp almost a decade ago. We were all listing off the furthest place we've travelled and he said New Haven which was only about 30 or so miles away. It turned out he was an orphan or something. Anyway, haven't seen him ever again. But yeah, where have you travelled and what would you say about your experience?
