Serious / How long do you think the CSE bubble will last?
« on: September 23, 2014, 07:57:52 PM »
CSE = Computer science (software), computer engineering (hardware), or computer science engineering (hybrid)

Right now a CSE major makes an easy six figure salary (although you do generally have to go for a Masters degree to get hired). A more typical salary for the science/engineering field is around 90k, but just about all businesses across all industries are hiring CSE majors, and there's a huge demand right now.

Serious / Do you think the Wow! Signal proves extraterrestrial life?
« on: September 23, 2014, 07:20:52 AM »
Throughout all the time humanity has recorded the stars, only once has a signal ever beamed back to earth. That was the Wow! signal in 1977, recorded at the Ohio State University. It lasted for 72 seconds and it was never detected again after that. Essentially there are only really two possibilities of its origin; scientists have concluded it nearly impossible for a radio signal tight beamed as it was to be natural. That means it either came from humans or it came from a star system 200 lightyears away. The signal was broadcasted on a spectrum reserved for astronomical purposes, meaning it is forbidden for terrestrial transmitters to transmit. If it wasn't terrestrial, then it would mean the civilization that broadcasted the signal is highly advanced, potentially hundreds or thousands of years ahead of us technologically speaking. To put that in perspective, the transmitter required to emit this signal would have to be 2,200,000 kilowatts. The strongest transmitter on earth is only 2,500 kW.

35 years later we responded to the signal by sending 10,000 Twitter messages in the direction of the origin of the signal in order to show the potential lifeforms that we are intelligent. But because we are 200 lightyears away, that means the signal was sent over 200 years ago, and it will take another 200 years for our message to get back to them, and we wouldn't even know until 200 years after that if they were to respond. And who knows if either of our civilizations will last that long before we we're wiped out by ourselves or some other catastrophic event.

I would speculate on this further, but I have to go to school and if this gets too long no will end up reading it anyway. So go ahead and discuss if you think the Wow! signal is extraterrestrial or not, and what it would mean if it is.

EDIT: Sorry for the incoherent-ness, I wrote this right after I woke up in the morning.

The Flood / Are you better at arguing orally or the internet?
« on: September 22, 2014, 06:03:30 AM »
There're a lot of times when I'm arguing with someone over the internet and I just feel like it would be so much easier if I could speak. But on the other hand, when you're arguing orally you don't have as much time to form your responses and you can't go back to check if you said something completely autistic. I really can't tell what I'd be better at personally.

Serious / Capitalism - a new perspective
« on: September 20, 2014, 11:33:16 PM »
Whether or not you're a Marxist, you still have to see that there's an evolution of economic systems in human societies. That is, from centrally controlled economies to freer economies and back to more central economies once again (and if you're a Marxist, towards a completely free economy). That's simply the pattern in which they develop, it's not to indicate which economy functions best. Now this is all besides my point, but keep it in mind.

The question I've been thinking about lately is whether or not technological progress could exist in a non-capitalist, primitive society. It sounds like an odd question at first, but one of the main reasons why the western world is able to produce so much technology is because of its hold of 80% of the world's resources (and having only 20% of the world's population). If these resources were to be divided evenly among the population, it certainly would be harder to develop technology (in other words, western scientists and engineers would have to do it with one fourth the resources). If resources were evenly divided, could we still develop medicines and vaccines? Could we still develop technologies to make our machines run on less materials? This is the one justification for an economic system that is inherently unethical and unequal: it might just be necessary.

Looking at the future we have to expect that we'll have collected enough resources (from technological advancements like asteroid mining or deep earth mining) in order for more resource distribution policies to take place. But until then, it might just be a good idea to have a rich portion of the population develop the technology so we may one day reach that point.

This is just an idea I'm playing with. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it (I'm not just asking for Meta's input; you can all have a whack at it).

The Flood / A question for anti-natalists
« on: September 19, 2014, 09:28:22 PM »
Say you have the opportunity to wipe out the species at the press of a button (or if not to kill humans but make them unable to reproduce) and the only way you can press that button is to bend over, spread your ass cheeks, and take a big black cock into your small, puckered anus, would you do it? Would you take the cock in your ass to wipe out humanity? You must last thirty minutes of hard anus fucking to press the button.

I think it'd be rather selfish not to.
