Serious / Scientific contradictions
« on: November 23, 2014, 01:08:24 PM »
As I'm not militant, I don't necessarily have the time or resources to come up with a big fancy infograph. But here's a list of topic in science that contradict each other.

- An expanding universe and a model that shows us we should be contracting. According to a physical model of the Universe, we should be contracting not expanding. But yet here we are, expanding. The mathematics simply don't work.

- Life from non-life. According to evolution, life arose from a "hot mix of chemical goop". But there's no evidence for it and the process cannot be recreated in a lab. As a means of damage control, scientists then claimed that life came from somewhere else in the galaxy. But that still leaves the question as to how that strain of life came to be. Is there just a never ending cycle of strains of life that come from another planet?

- Consciousness and free will, a contradiction to evolution. How are you to act upon instinct, survive, and reproduce if you're not being told you have to? Scientists claim that consciousness is explainable through biological processes, and that its purpose is to give humans the illusion that we operate under free will. But there's still no purpose in evolving towards free will if our biology dictates us to act the way they want us to act and not the way we act through free will. And if consciousness is simply an illusion, who is this illusion being relayed to? Another consciousness?

- The four fundamental forces. There's no reason why or how the fundamental forces exist, and in fact we can only measure their effect, but the particles that should make up these forces don't seem to exist. We invent names like the Graviton to make it seem like they exist, but they have as little evidence for them as dark matter.

I might add more later, but we can discuss these contradictions for now. But maybe the point here is that just because we don't understand something doesn't mean we have to label it as a contradiction. Maybe there's more to it and we just don't have that information.

The Flood / Is there a smart person word for based?
« on: November 17, 2014, 11:03:52 PM »
That's just how I've been for the past month or so. It's like I'm doing this shit and I really don't care. Not in the depressing kind of not caring, but in the comfortable, chill kind of not giving a shit. Not that I'm slacking in class, I'm getting shit done, but it's like I really don't care. If I died right now I really wouldn't care, that's how based I'm feeling right now. And it's not like there aren't problems I have to deal with, they just don't bother me that much. It's like I'm anti-depressed. You know how depressed people are aware of the same problems as they would be if they weren't depressed, but the problems affect them much more? I'm like the opposite. I'm aware of the same problems a normal person is aware of, they just affect much less.

Idk, but I really like it honestly. Anyone else have similar experiences to share?

The Flood / What are you losers doing with your life? Oh right...
« on: November 17, 2014, 10:40:10 PM »
How's it feel losers? Once I pass these classes with straight As, I'm taking a plane to California the very next day after my last final exam. While I'm enjoying a free vacation with my friends, going to a wedding, sightseeing, kayaking a river all the way to San Francisco Bay, hiking up mountains and shit, and fucking lots of slutty Californian girls, you betas will all be stuck in your mom's house, doing nothing ever since you barely graduated high school.

I'll remember to take pics for you faggots. I leave on the 12th and come back the 20th, just in time for another party to get fucking drunk and wasted, pretty much all girls. Just keep it in the back of your head what you could be doing.

See you later, faggots.

How would you deal with them? Would you take harder stances against the country and allow tensions to rise? Would you try and form more diplomatic connections between them and the US/UK? Or would you take a more neutral isolationist approach?

I think going back to Cold War relations is actually the best way to go. It may sound stupid, but considering how it affects worldwide competition, it's actually the most economical tactic for the entire globe. Economics of course heavily correlate with the welfare of people, so it certainly an important factor to consider.

If it were your decision, what would you do?

Serious / Republicans hold more college degrees than democrats
« on: November 17, 2014, 03:45:14 PM »
They are more likely to have higher education, they have higher incomes overall, and represent the majority of the middle and rich classes. Democrats only represent the majority of poor people. Overall, they are far more educated than democrats.

How does this change your view on the typical 'dumb republican stereotype' the majority of you hold?

So the MSA (Muslim Student Association) was giving out free cake today but only if you asked the table a question about Islam. So I asked about the cultural differences of Islam among the different regions of the world and they explained how religion and culture are two different things and two separate practices. For example weddings are not supposed to mix their local cultural traditions and religious traditions (not that the rule is always held though).

Anyway, part of the process of getting free cake was writing down our name and phone number for some raffle I guess. Of course I immediately forget about all of that once I get the free cake which was fucking delicious.

About an hour or two later I get a call from a random number that I let go to voicemail since I was in my friend's car and it was way too loud to hear anything they would say anyway. So they sent me a text saying "Hi is this Dustin? Just wanted to let you know on behalf of the MSA you won the edible arrangement." At first it immediately strikes me as a scam so I'm extremely tempted to text back to 'go fuck yourselves.' No really I had it typed out and everything until one my friends snatched the phone from my hands and yelled at me for being rude. So instead I texted back "MSA?" and the guilt I felt after seeing that they were the nice people who gave me free cake was just horrible. But I went and got the free edible arrangement and man it was so good.

Sorry this isn't another philosophy story, those are usually pretty good.

ITT: We discuss the psychophysics of internet trolling

It's an interesting topic actually. Mere digital words on a screen, with no real energy value other than the light that bounces off of it into your eyes, can somehow make people rage so hard they throw their computer mouse across the room and shatter it into a million pieces. But how could such an energy transfer take place? How could the typing of words piss people off so much?

Here's what I'm thinking. We've got to be implanted with things called "triggers" that set us off and causes us to expel large amounts of energy. The "bait" on the computer screen is simply a signal, that which sets of the trigger and causes what's known as butthurt.

What do you guys think of the psychophysics of internet trolling? Is it a mysterious energy transfer or is it a trigger?

Serious / First contact
« on: November 17, 2014, 09:25:25 AM »
Say an alien race makes contact with the government. Is the government obligated to tell the public that they have just discovered an alien race? And if this were to really happen, do you think the government would tell the public about their discovery or not?

Personally I don't think they should be obligated to tell us. If there is any pressing reason why you should know, say because you work for NASA, then you will be informed, but otherwise they are a taking a huge risk just to tell you something you don't even have to know.

And what I actually think the government would do? They'd probably tell us. Not right away of course, but they'd want to make sure they deliver the information to the public properly to minimize as much risk as possible.

"Please, just let me watch child terrorist porn while hacking into Target and creating Trojan Horse viruses to install on as many innocent victim's computers as possible."

I've still yet to hear a decent rebuttal to the argument as to why you're worried about the NSA if you have nothing to hide. Stupid ideological answers like 'but that's a violation of privacy' I do not take seriously.

« on: November 16, 2014, 08:30:08 PM »
You might say millions of years or you might say ten. The question is way too open ended for any of our answers to have any meaningful trend. But my best guess would be 350 years or so. It shouldn't take too long for a virus to kill us all off.

It's probably impossible to calculate the amount of matter in the universe, but I think we can all agree that it's a set amount. So why do you think it's that amount as opposed to any other possible amount? Is it random? Is our set amount the only way it possibly could work? Are there an infinite amount of universes and we are one of the few that work?

The intensity of the singularity = the amount of time it takes for gravity to pull everything back together
