Serious / Are arguments legit if they're based on morals or ethics?
« on: November 30, 2014, 01:10:12 AM »
I feel like the argument can't really be sound if its reasoning is just "it's the right thing to do." Anything that subjective can be molded and used towards anything really. I get that some ethics are pretty agreeable like not killing people and not stealing from people but there are still people who disagree with that. It's not that I don't have any ethics myself, it's just that I don't care to recognize them as universal truths when it comes to solving problems, because they're not.

Serious / White people empathize less with darker skinner people
« on: November 30, 2014, 12:07:33 AM »
Quote
https://ose.utsc.utoronto.ca/ose/story.php?id=2135

>New research from the University of Toronto-Scarborough shows that white people’s mirror-neuron-system fires much less, if at all, when they watch people of colour performing motor tasks.
>After the United States invaded Iraq and massacred tens of thousands of Iraqis, worldwide terrorist recruitment skyrocketed, as well as terrorist attacks targeting the U.S. and coalition countries. Terrorist leaders cited the Iraq invasion and the deaths of Iraqis as the reason for the attacks. However, White Americans did not buy it, believing it to be a smokescreen for some other reason. It must be Islam, they reasoned, as they grasped at straws.
>The vast majority of White Americans could not empathize with brown people at a very basic level. For most White Americans, the death and violence of thousands of brown bodies was just part of some abstract ethical argument to position oneself as morally superior to the United States. For most White Americans, brown people dying just meant flickers on the television screen about something happening far away. They didn’t feel the overwhelming anger and sadness they would normally feel when someone they know dies without reason. They couldn't see the full reality of what death means, when the people who die are brown.
>White people complain online that they cannot see the facial expressions of (East) Asian faces. For many white people, East Asians are like emotionless robots who are efficient at machine-like things like number crunching. Some white people argue that while East Asians may be able to play musical instruments beautifully, they play music without soul.
>Most white people just don’t see them as humans. When brown people die through violence, or East Asians express joy or sadness through their faces, most white people’s brains just don't register the human connection between their bodies.

Is this any true for you? Be honest now, no one's going to judge.

Serious / Double standards among atheists
« on: November 29, 2014, 08:38:59 PM »
Atheists believe to be persecuted using a term called the Christian Persecution Complex but then say that feminists aren't persecuted and are only making it all up, despite their argument against feminism also applying to themselves: that persecution in the western world is so little that it is negligible.

Serious / Should non-STEM majors be required to learn algebra?
« on: November 27, 2014, 01:47:49 PM »
I hear a lot of complaining from people about how they're being forced to learn certain math problems they'll never use in their lifetime. The other side of the argument is that math helps you practice logic which can be applied to many other things.

I'd like opinions from STEM and non-STEM majors.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/166787/liberal-self-identification-edges-new-high-2013.aspx

You have the low-mental social ideologies (religion and equality) and then you have the higher-mental technical matter (science and economics). Both parties have a monopoly on one of each of these categories (democrats having equality and science and republicans having religion and economics). Because it takes a greater depth of knowledge to value egalitarian values over religious and to understand scientific matters over economical, helps explains why there are more conservatives than liberals, if you assume there are more low-intelligence Americans than higher-intelligence Americans. The need to have all four of these criteria probably explains why no party can exceed an average of 50% of the victories. Those at the top of society that hold this system together use their influence and power to make sure both sides are well balanced (the likelihood that the country just so happens to be split right in half politically for a consistent period of 50 or 60 years is extremely small).

Am I being coherent right now?

And yes, I know it's a bit more complicated than just 'equality and religion' but you know what I mean.

So a bunch of people have been getting their panties in a twist because I'm not donating anything for Nuka's fund. I know a lot of people in a similar situation, and to be quite honest they deserve my money over him. Why is that exactly? Probably because Nuka has decided to keep me as his 'forum enemy' for the past few months or so, ever since I went on that anti-loli campaign to cleanse the forum of its anime spam. On top of that, he's recently tried spreading false rumors about how I harassed Noelle or something during game night that I've had to explain to four different people now. I think the joke they're getting upset over is when I asked Cheat if SecondClass' harassment of Noelle improved the site because it generated more revenue from the ads and the refreshes. I know that some of you like to consider yourselves special snowflakes who are easily offended, but please be aware that this nothing more than a joke. Anyway, even if Nuka had not been harassing me for the past few months, it's not like I would be obligated to donate to him by mere association through a shared forum. Though because I am a sucker, I probably would have chipped in some money if he didn't act like an ass to me. Bottom line with this is that you can't treat someone like shit and then expect them to help you when you ask for it.

I'm sorry I had to make a thread about this, but I've received multiple PMs with people yelling at me about how horrible a person I am without actually understanding my side of the story. If you have any other questions about this please ask them in this thread. Any kind of insulting or name calling will be reported immediately. Please try not to turn this thread into a flame war.

Serious / Totally not an exaggerated hypothetical thread
« on: November 24, 2014, 06:36:37 PM »
If all I see is my subjective view of reality, then why should I care about my assumption that other consciousnesses exist? And if I were able to emotionally accept that logical conclusion then I should be able to say that (here's the exaggerated hypothetical) if I were given the choice to exterminate the human race in return for having all my dreams come true in a virtual reality type world, that it'd be a no brainer question and I would quickly choose myself over the rest of the species. (If you want to make that hypothetical slightly less retarded, you can pretend that you're a commander of a ship who got captured by aliens who are prying you with questions about where planet earth is.)

Is there anything wrong with this line of thinking? And is not acceptable according to your own standards to make a decision where you choose yourself over the rest of our species?

Serious / Is bioremediation the solution to garbage disposal?
« on: November 23, 2014, 11:18:21 PM »
This idea is a bit out there in terms of what's realistic, but if we could genetically engineer different species of microorganisms with each a unique ability to convert a different chemical compound into its component molecules, then we could apply these microorganisms to dumps and clean the place up. It would get more complicated than that of course, you might have one organism that converts plastic into one material, and another organism that converts that material into something biodegradable.

Bioremediation is something we already have the technology for. What I'm doing is taking the idea a step further to take on large scale dumps. Really I'm just exploring some of these topics because I plan on becoming a chemical engineer and I like to dream about inventing some world-saving technology and becoming famous for it... but ahh. Anyway, do you think bioremediation is the solution to garbage disposal or is it recycling? Technically, just about everything can be reused and recycled in some manner or another, the problem is actually digging through the trash and separating everything.

What are your thoughts on the problem of garbage disposal and what do you think is its long term solution?

"OMG HE'S ARGUING AN OPINION THAT HE DOESN'T ACTUALLY AGREE WITH, WHAT A SHITPOSTER BAN HIM BAN HIM!!"

Someone please tell me what's wrong with playing devil's advocate. Arguing isn't about winning, it's about expanding your own knowledge. If all you ever do is argue and at the end yell "HAHA PROVED YOU WRONG I'M RIGHT YOU'RE WRONG NA NA NA NA NA NA!!!!" then you're wasting your fucking time. Arguing from a different perspective is not only fun but you learn more about the actual integrity of your own arguments. So please stop crying, bitching, and moaning because this is what I do. It's not against the rules and if it bothers you so much then please escort yourself to your mute list and edit it accordingly.

Serious / Help me figure out this problem
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:29:25 PM »
It is because of this that I haven't been able to form any political opinions (ever since I threw away my old beliefs). I've been thinking about this for a while now and I still can't figure it out. The problem is in knowing if democracy really is rigged or not--by a small group of wealthy technocrats or some other sort of bureaucratic group, corporate or political.

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes that there are a small few in control of the country. They invent these two ideologies that groups everyone into predictable voting patterns. There's no such thing as uneducated voting because you only have two choices. And it makes more sense when you realize that when you take away all the pointless ideologies and media labeling, the two politicians are nearly identical.

After thinking about this, I then asked myself, 'but Global Climate Change surely is a problem after all, how could it not be?' If these supremely intelligent masterminds are really that smart, they wouldn't allow the right wing to be against it. But I guess the real solution to Global Warming isn't government action, but rather technological innovation. The only sure fire method of combating Global Warming is to limit fossil fuels, and that's not a change you can make over night unless you're looking for some serious consequences.

I honestly just find it a lot more likely over the counter argument which makes it seem like everyone in government is stupid, crazy, and/or has no idea what they're doing. The counter argument being that the common political issues are representative of real individual beliefs (i.e. true democracy) and not that of geniuses who manipulate the public.

If democracy isn't rigged, then I can say I'm a hardcore technocrat that doesn't believed non-skilled/non-educated people should be able to have a say in politics. However if it is rigged, then there's literally no point to discussing politics at all, because both methods of either political party should work.

Am I actually making any sense here or do I just sound like I'm wearing a tin foil hat? Please give your thoughts.
