Serious / Do politicians have secret agendas?« on: December 06, 2014, 09:11:05 AM »
I guess it kind of makes sense now why the democrats don't support nuclear power. Just as the Republicans are in bed with oil companies, the democrats are in bed with green power companies. This is just speculation of course but I'm curious of any other possible hidden agendas and how they may supply a different reason for why they support a certain policy, but they're really after something else.

The Flood / Missing Malaysian plane found in... Europe?« on: December 05, 2014, 10:49:43 AM »
According to new investigations, the Russian spy agency KGB has concluded that its remains have been linked to a plane crash in the Ukraine that was supposedly shot down by rebel forces a few months ago.
Read more here. Honestly I'm a bit skeptical why this wasn't discovered a long time ago, but I guess these investigations are pretty difficult especially considering the instability in the Ukraine. 345

The Flood / How come wanting money is seen as a bad thing?« on: December 05, 2014, 01:15:38 AM »
Call me a baiter, but I think it's liberal propaganda. They want people to be poor because they know poor people vote for them since they're the ones they can go to for welfare and free handouts.
So if you don't like money chances are you've been brainwashed by some Disney movie when you were a kid and you seem to think it's intrinsically evil or something stupid. 347
Serious / A question for bible-reading religious people« on: December 04, 2014, 10:41:40 PM »
If you are asked by god to do something unethical, say kill a child, would you do it?
You must choose either ethics or faith in this scenario, you cannot say that god would never tell someone to do it, because he actually has made someone make that decision in the bible (there's a nice quick summary of the story here, and also a giveaway for where this question comes from). So would you obey god and kill the child, or would you not? I know there aren't a lot of Christians on the forum, but I'm curious what answer you'd make of this. I'm not making this to attack religious people, I'm legitimately just curious how you guys would respond. And if you're wondering what's up with all the philosophy today, it's because I've spent all day studying it. 348
Serious / Fairness as a moral ideal« on: December 04, 2014, 10:18:09 PM »
To what degree do you value fairness?
What I like about capitalism is that it's truly a test about personal strength and overcoming (although it is true that Darwinism will always exist no matter what the political climate). However what I don't like about capitalism is that it's inherently unfair, and that some people start out much better than others. How is capitalism a test of personal strength when one individual can inherit a billion dollar company and another can inherit a debt? While my belief in immediate transfer to socialism has subsided, this belief, perhaps based more on personal experience and emotion rather than a legitimate ethical ideal, has stayed with me. And if it's the case that fairness, or radical fairness in my case, is something I value, then the implications are quite high. It would mean that I support the abolition of the family and a completely redone social system. So what degree of fairness do you personally value? And why do you hold that ideal? 349
Serious / Is anything really invented?« on: December 04, 2014, 10:06:51 PM »
You all know the difference between invention and discovery right? I've been thinking about this for a few minutes now and it looks to me that they're both human terms. It's not like the possibility of a machine assembled in a certain way hasn't existed before someone thinks of it. If you think about it this way, everything is really only discovered, not invented. In human language we make the distinction because one type of discovery involves much more trial and error as well as imagination than the other and it's practical for us to make the distinction, but in philosophic terms they seem to be one in the same.
This might seem like a relatively simple and negligible point to make, and if so you may as well let this threads sink and die, but if I'm wrong about anything please explain why. There are a lot of implications to be made if it's the case that every idea or possibility already exists outside our minds. 350
Serious / What's more important: the state or the individual?« on: December 04, 2014, 09:49:21 PM »
I'm asking this subjectively, of course. You are the individual.
Do we sacrifice one's personal freedoms (e.g. getting drafted into a war) for the sake of the larger society as a whole, or do we respect, completely, the conscious choice of the individual despite the needs of the state? 351
Serious / How much money do you think we spend on the elderly?« on: December 04, 2014, 04:34:10 PM »
I didn't actually think about this topic all that deeply until earlier today when I was at the hospital, but there's really a whole lot of old people there. Like a lot of old people, far more than young people and they are spending millions of dollars, each, to extend their lives by mere months or years. So I was talking with my friend about it, and we both agreed that we shouldn't waste so many of our hospital resources towards old people when they don't have long to live anyway, especially when it's a miserable time. And it's not just hospital resources, it's social security, medicare, and all the other expensive holes we live with so that old people can extend their life by a small percentage.
Now I understand why we have all these expensive programs in the first place: because no one wants to be the one to say that we're not going to take care of old people anymore. And the ethical argument always precedes the logical expect in times of urgency. Well we're hitting an urgency now and we're going to have to recognize some truths. Sad it may be, but this diversion of our resources is crushing our kids' future and our present. Capitalist or not, you have to recognize that such large government spending on something that gives little to none back to the economy is only taking away from everyone else. Not to mention that hospitals are crammed with patients as it is and they're only getting worse. At they very least we need to decide if the cost of a trip to the hospital is worth x amount of years of life that it adds (e.g. nothing worse than $10k to extend a life by one year) with the exception of kids considering they've only lived a short time and adding a year on for them is much more meaningful than for an elderly person. Because I am a capitalist, I do believe it is okay and economically beneficial for old people to spend their personal earnings towards their health, but I disagree taking it from the government because that money could be better spent somewhere else, like on children or infrastructure. Anyway I know a lot of you are going to come in with emotional arguments, but I'm just going to ignore you. If you have any logical arguments for me, please share them. I'm here to expand my knowledge not to cling onto an idea so if you can convince me that's actually more good for me than it is for you. 352
Serious / Physics experts please help explain why this wouldn't work« on: December 03, 2014, 08:38:27 PM »
Self-perpetual motion thread
So here's the idea: You have a space elevator consisting of one large tube. To generate power, water is flushed up and down the tube hitting the orange rotors and making them spin. The water uses the lack or pressure to move upwards and uses gravity to move downwards. The purple latch at the top of the structure is the door that would open up to space that would create the pressure shift that would launch the water upwards. The door is conveniently closed in time before the water escapes into space. The water then falls back down to earth. Spoiler The only work that the machine relies on is the power to open and close the door to allow the pressure to change. But I don't see how it would require any more force than the amount it would generate. Obviously this machine cannot work because it violates the laws of physics. I'd just like to know where the flaw is because I can't find it myself. 353
Serious / Thoughts on Friedrich Nietzsche?« on: December 02, 2014, 04:47:54 PM »
I've got finals next week and I have to learn this guy up so I may as well make a thread about him. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the guy's philosophies or on him in particular?
I admire his critique on Christianity and how he believes it got started. I'm still a bit confused about his main philosophical points, specifically the Will to Power idea. I got the sense that the guy seems to admire power, though he doesn't appreciate Christianity that much, even before its decline. Also feel free to add your input on Kierkegaard, Marx, Kant, and Hegel. 354
The Flood / So I bothered to look up the plot of God's Not Dead...« on: December 02, 2014, 04:13:28 PM »
And this is how it ends:
Spoiler Ultimately, it comes down to the third and final debate between Radisson and Josh, who again both make compelling points. Josh then halts his line of debate to pose a question to Radisson: "Why do you hate God?" After Josh repeats the question twice more, Radisson explodes in rage, confirming he hates God for his mother's death that left him alone despite his prayers. Josh then casually asks Radisson how he can hate someone that doesn't exist. In the end, Martin (Paul Kwo), a foreign exchange student whose father had encouraged him not to convert to Christianity so he can stay focused with the class, stands up and says "God's not dead." Almost the entire class follows Martin's lead, causing Radisson to leave the room in defeat. lol 355

The Flood / Does anyone remember DeeJ's conversation with Arky about Sociopaths United?« on: December 02, 2014, 06:12:51 AM »
Lol
Arky was asking DeeJ if he could replace an inactive SecondClass alt (I believe it was SecondClass) who was the admin at the time, so Arky could have his account be admin. But while DeeJ was looking through the members list he saw a shit ton of accounts with really sketchy names (Nigger Obama, Liberal Genocide, Death 2 Israel, Jews Did 911, etc.) unbeknownst that they were all my alts (save for a couple of Comm's alts). So he got really, really mad and started asking Arky a bunch of questions about his group. I think he blamed it all on me was told he had to ban them all or he wouldn't do shit for him. Thinking back on it he was pretty lucky he didn't get muted from the get go, but all of my bad encounters with DeeJ (there's also some Camnator stories and some funny Sapphire stories too) gives me some satisfaction that I'm going to be one of those members that he remembers for a long time. 357
The Flood / >When you wake up to your fucking cat meowing in your face« on: December 02, 2014, 05:42:40 AM »

Serious / What if the Universe is just a part of a larger system?« on: December 01, 2014, 11:59:43 AM »
The speed of light is only defined by the Higgs Field. But if the Higgs Field is alterable, then we can essentially go as fast as we want (lower mass to zero). We assume this isn't possible because we think of the Universe as a closed system and you would be changing the equilibrium if you were to go instantly fast. But if the Universe isn't a closed system and altering the Higgs Field meant altering another Universe or another dimension (for example) then theoretically FTL travel could be possible since we wouldn't be altering the larger system's equilibrium.
