But the point I'm trying to make, is why don't they try to get things done sooner normally without having death or something knock on their door and give them a boot in the ass to move?
That's my question. Why do they need that?
For the same reason. Right now I eat healthy, exercise not entirely for fun, save 20% of my income in a retirement plan, and plan for the future specifically because I assume I'll have one. If I knew I would drop dead in a year, you can be sure I'd do it fifty pounds heavier without a penny to my name, fully satisfied that I'd lived all I could in that year.
But I don't do that now because I assume I'll live well into retirement and have plenty of time to do what needs doing.
You're talking as if there's no middle ground to be had between potentially living your last and living a long life. Kinda disappointing a little bit, don't you think?
I don't understand what you're saying. I don't just wallow in misery while I wait for life to happen, but I hedge my enjoyment of life in preparation for living later.
And you don't think that's taking a bit of a gamble that might backfire on you? I'm not saying that you wallow in misery or just sit around and wait for things to happen. But, generally, people can always do more with themselves but they never go for it. They let a future they have truly no idea over what's going to happen in, hinder them in some ways. That's not to say that everybody should go apeshit like it was their last day. You can always do things intelligently, after all. It's just strange to me that you'd need such a big kick in the ass like death to go after what you really want to do.

So, I ask, why should the presence and awareness of death be the extra push you need to get up and do things in your life that matter to you? Because you suddenly know that you have this exact amount of time to work with before you'll never get another chance?
1. You have a homework assignment due tomorrow 2. You have a homework assignment due next month
Which one motivates you to get it done sooner?
Both. The one that's due in a week, obviously, since I have a shorter time frame to work with.
So you understand the answer to your question, but you just want to be argumentative.
Not really, no. I'm asking how other people feel so fine and dandy to let things slip by them. As I told you. I'd take the project that's a month away and finish it in the timespan as if it were a project due in a week since I'm aware that for myself, procrastinating can be an issue if I let it. Or, in this instance, I'm asking why so many people are keen on putting things off until the last minute. Of course a smaller time frame is going to motivate somebody to get things done sooner. But the point I'm trying to make, is why don't they try to get things done sooner normally without having death or something knock on their door and give them a boot in the ass to move? That's my question. Why do they need that?

Verb. Do you wanna know a little bit more about shields? It just has to do with certain mechanics is all, now that you know a little bit more about that whole deal.

Both. The one that's due in a week, obviously, since I have a shorter time frame to work with. The one that's due in a month? I get it out of the way in the span of the one that's due in a week so that I don't have to deal with it later. No hassle or stress of having let a month pass by and then finding you're at the deadline. And if you're asking about motivation? The month long one. Because I know myself, the more I sit round and do nothing, the less I want to do anything. And the more I'd have to drag myself due to procrastination. I haven't done as well as I have on my own by procrastinating. I've gotten along this whole time by getting things done.

At this point I've realized that dying really doesn't grant you any specialties. The only exception to the rule would be the make a wish foundation, for kids with terminal illnesses.
But no such thing exists for adults, as far as I know. Dying doesn't unlock you any bonus doors in our system. If you're poor, out on the streets and will never land that dream trip to the bahamas, dying won't make a difference. You'll still be poor, and out on the streets, never landing that dream trip to the bahamas.
So, I ask, why should the presence and awareness of death be the extra push you need to get up and do things in your life that matter to you? Because you suddenly know that you have this exact amount of time to work with before you'll never get another chance? It's rather ironic, actually. Right from the start, our cells are making copying errors and oxygen is slowly corroding our systems. The sunlight we absorb is blasting us with radiation to help break us down among many other things over time. Throw in random factors and you can go at any time.
And, knowing that, people still don't live up to their full potential. They don't live their goals or their dreams. Always putting them off for later. Maybe when they're retired. Maybe when I save up enough this, maybe when I have that.
If I was told I'd be dropping in one year, I wouldn't change much from what I'm doing now. Death wouldn't allow me to suddenly achieve what I'm after, what I want to do, or where I want to go. So, all that leaves is where I'm at now.

I remember this article. Somebody posted it a couple of years ago, I think. At the very least, I remember that island.
Slightly off topic but wouldn't it be cool as fuck to have a house on top of that island?

it took me until my 3rd character before i actually tried learning how to parry. i've found it useful for killing the smaller enemies in the Burg and Parish areas but i'd rather not try it on any bigger enemies and get demolished in the process...
clever dodging and blocking are still my go-to combat strategies
That's actually a sound idea since most people don't know what kind of enemies you can parry. You can parry everything that's humanoid and relatively your size.

Does Midget even count?
He's legit dumb but he turns it up to 11 when he's here, because one certain user still takes his bait.
I've always thought he was just a troll, and I'm not sure why he's allowed on Serious.
I mean his name is literally "Niggerbot 9000" so I thought that was enough of a giveaway.
Midget knows how to just barely skirt around the rules so he can be his usual midget self bet never get bannu'd. It's all dancing on technicalities.

Then again, remember here verb. You'll likely die in this game. If you're ever in a situation where you're in trouble or stuck in a pinch, there's a magic five letter word that will save you.
Death.
So you're saying you should die on purpose if it'll play to your advantage?
That is all too familiar.
Damn. This game really does dig and play into that old-school Nintendo game ethos, doesn't it?
Well, I can't really say that there's any point in the game where dying is beneficial to you. Except...maybe to save yourself from being afflicted with a certain status effect. But even still, that'd be unlikely. But, what I am saying is that you'll never encounter a situation that you'll get stuck in a loop for. Aka saving in Fallout and finding out 2 seconds later that there's a pack of deathclaws behind you. In this game, death isn't THE end. Like Flee said. Everything just continues.

Not to be harsh here or anything. I don't exactly see the point of doing that. Can you explain to me the reasoning of simulated 60 fps which chops up certain cutscenes.
On a dead game.
I can understand doing it for the sake of curiosity. But on the whole, what does it bring?

Don't worry about having a "class" like other RPGs. You can upgrade everything to the max.
It'll take a while not playing PvP though. Killing a few dudes that get you a million Souls to level up with really speeds things up.
Good thinking. I forgot about that. If Verb doesn't want no pvp shenanigans then all he has to do is get past the level 120 range and he should be set. 120 was the optimal pvp level agreed on by the community.
I went to 140 on one of my characters and never saw another player again.
I'm level 325 I think and I constantly get invaded in the Forest. I haven't tried invading myself though.
That's the forest m8. It's a well known fact that no matter what level you are in there it's going to suck balls.
The Forest is great, is my point. It's always active.
I never really enjoyed spawning into the same world of the guy I invaded five minutes ago just to get ganked by three guys casting pursuers tbh.

How does saving work, exactly? I know it auto-saves, but like... when? I'm always afraid to quit the game.
All the time. It saves where you stop playing.
All right, cool.
It auto saves basically after every action you do. And most importantly when you quit the game through the menus it autosaves then and there as well.
I actually have to hand it to From in that regard. If your game unexpectedly crashes for whatever reason, you'll lose very little progress unless you where fighting a boss. Like we're talking seconds. Open a door, game crashes.
Load up the game, you're sitting front of the door a few seconds before you open it. They do stellar work in that department, at least. I don't know of any other games out there that can save so often without significantly impeding your progress in-game with a wait time.
...I can actually see this backfiring, though. Suppose I quit the game when I'm in a pinch. The game auto-saves.
Am I basically trapped in this pinch now? What do I do then? Am I just fucked?
Not quite. I've done this before, since you bring it up. I was in the middle of fighting enemies when my power went out. I loaded up the game with less than three quarters of my health left because the fight was going badly. I didn't spawn in the middle of fighting the enemy, but I spawned close to them and had a few key seconds of reaction time on their part to realize I was there, and on my own, to just cheese it the fuck out of there. Then again, remember here verb. You'll likely die in this game. If you're ever in a situation where you're in trouble or stuck in a pinch, there's a magic five letter word that will save you. Death.

I like to make jokes about how half dead I am.
Seriously. If you're ever exceptionally ill just joke about yourself. It's like everybody in the room is afraid to laugh because you've just reminded them that you're halfway to laying down in a grave and they'd feel guilty about laughing with you.
It's like being the outsider and listening to inside jokes.

Oh ya, Verb. There's been a lot of discussion about pvp, but I feel like everybody forgot about the most underrated covenant in the game.
The Gravelord Covenant.
This covenant works a little differently. Rather than have you invade a players world, you, as a gravelord, curse three player's worlds at the same time. Now, what this does, is spawn a few black phantom enemies. These are enemies that are drastically tougher than the normal enemies in the area.
So you, as the player, have to go and find the gravelord sigil on the ground as it shifts and moves around the area with the player who cursed you. The person who cursed you is boxed into a certain area and can't fast travel and just leave you cursed for all eternity.
When you find the sigil, you can invade the gravelord's world and kill him to remove the curse. The kind of neat spin on this, is that the three cursed people can invade the gravelord's world together and royally fuck his shit up.
Personally, I always liked this covenant above all others, because it kept me on my toes if I was ever cursed, and when I invaded the gravelords world and on the occasion, happened to die, I lost nothing for it and gained more for killing the black phantom enemies and the gravelord himself.
You might not like the idea of it because consent and all that, but I always liked it more over invading a player's world and flat out giving them no chance.

Gentlemen, on this fine day we've passed a landmark point in or long campaign. There were many challenges along the way. Many obstacles and struggles. But finally, we did it. This is only the start. Let us congratulate those brave men, whom today, got past the dark souls tutorial.
