This one just fucked me up.

James Gunn translated Groot’s final I am Groot in Infinity War.

He looked to Rocket, and said:

“Dad?”

Now I don’t know which is worse. Spidey sensing it’s about to happen with his spider sense and taking those few extra seconds or Groot looking to his dad and asking what’s going on while Rocket looks on helplessly.

There should never come a point where you have to hit your child and in no scenario is it justified.
That’s very easy to say.
And it's doable in practice. My parents never laid a hand to me. I know many people who  have never been hit by their parents.
Not in every case. Like spanking, it doesn’t work on all kids. I am not advocating for actual hitting. But in some kids spanking has to be an option.
that is actual hitting

there is no way around this

Spanking isn’t hitting if controlled. It isn’t the same if you lightly slap their bottom as full on hitting them. It still gets their attention.

Case in point: I had to spank my youngest. I am not proud of this. He punched another kid. He will be expelled from preschool. He has to know this is serious. Now, 5 weeks later, no incidents.

I didn’t like it. I still feel like shit. But, lesson learned.  Two light slaps to the bottom and no repeat behavior.

Very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

I don't understand how the ending was "gutsy."

It’s a Disney/Marvel movie. They have never ended a movie like this.

Spoiler
While it’s undone by the very nature of the MCU with 9 sequels already announced, killing off 14 major characters and running credits with no repercussions on the villain? That’s not in Disney’s nature.

You're overstating things. It's not that big a deal.

Name another movie that ended in such a way.

I would argue Civil War ended on a darker note than this film. At least there was some lasting impact to the Avengers getting splintered that can be felt even in this film. All the tension from half the cast dying at the end of Infinity War is completely negated because 5 minutes before it happens, they establish that the infinity gauntlet can turn back time and bring people back to life. There's absolutely zero chance anyone who is dead stays dead, except for MAYBE Gamora.

It's a "dark" note to end on, sure, but not especially so, nor is it gutsy or ground breaking by any means. You're completely overselling its impact for god knows what reason. Praise the film for its real strengths, not undeserved nonsense.

Reread the OP. I said exactly what you did. We all know they’re all getting revived. Most of them go on to star in Phase 4 movies that have already been announced.

But, to end the first act on such a note? Not many movies end on the bad guy wins after handing the heroes their ass. Certainly not a Disney movie. I expected them to pull an Empire Strikes Back and show the remaining heroes regrouping. Nope. Just the main bad guy sitting down to enjoy a job well done. No studio has done that. Aside from Watchmen, the bad guy never wins. Even there he is left guilt ridden. You have to see that nearly noone saw Disney having the guts to show restraint and not put in a regrouping moment or something else to ease Joe Popcorn’s feelings.

Theory #1

Spoiler
Dr Strange cast a spell that changes Thanos’s wish to trap everyone in the Soul stone instead of killing them. When discovered the remaining Avengers race to take Thanos out and release the beings in the Stone. That may have been why Thanos saw Gamora after the wish.

My reaction is that I am stunned and a little jaded that Marvel/Disney had the guts to end Act I that way. I expected some cop out or plot device to set up the next movie.

Spoiler
All they did is set up Captain Marvel. Besides that, almost everyone died besides the core original Avengers. Thanos wins and sits down to watch a sunset.

I am jaded because we know the line up for Phase 4, and whatever big event happens here, it has to be undone or those chapters can’t be written.

Best scenes?

Spoiler
Thanos on Gamora’s homeworld was good. The battle between the Guardians and Thanos was great. It showed the stones as pretty powerful without going to the explode if you touch them plot device. Any of the Scarlet Witch scenes worked really well.

Worst scenes?

Spoiler
All of the Thor and Guardians scenes. They felt forced in for comedy. I didn’t like Dinklage’s character. We get it, he’s a little person. Making him a 12 foot tall midget isn’t funny. The wakanda battle was a bit too Phantom Menace for my liking.

Theories:

Spoiler
Coming soon

So Strange just casually dispels a singularity. How is he not a literal god?

Dr Strange is probably the most OP hero Marvel has. As the Sorcerer Supreme he goes regularly against or with cosmic abstracts, which are a level or two above gods. Think Batman with the power to create prep time and a book that gives him whatever power or plot device needed at the moment.

Guardians 2, Ragnarok, Avengers 2, Civil War and Dr Strange should be enough to know who everyone is and why they are where they’re at.

Now, here’s an interesting question:

Spoiler
Was Thanos really a villain? I can’t really fault his logic. He wanted to avoid extinction due to overpopulation. He didn’t see any species capable of stopping unchecked growth. He just removed the choice. I don’t know. That kinda makes Verb Thanos.
Spoiler
mass genocide instead of just making resources or whatever with the Infinity Gauntlet seems a bit extreme

Spoiler
He didn’t do mass genocide though. He culled half the population of sentient beings. He did this out of what he saw happen to Titan. I don’t think he could make resources infinite. Look what happened to him and the glove by wishing half the universe dead. There’s clearly a limit on what the MCU gauntlet can do. This isn’t the comic one. In the comics Thor couldn’t have touched him.  I think, given the limitations, he chose the most expedient option.

Anyone claiming “thought crimes” is a pedophile.

You want to watch porn involving kids??

Fuck you.

That porn involved kids.

I don’t care if it’s 30 years old.

Pedophiles should have their dick cut off.
Theres people that dont act on those urges at all. Do you think someone is born gay or they become it on their own volition?

Are you defending people watching child pornography?

I thought the first one was pretty good, honestly, but I'd be surprised they can keep it going. Regardless, I don't get too hyped for comedies.

Hopefully they call it quits here. Kill it and move on.

At the end of the day, Disney/Marvel isn’t killing filmmaking.

Yes. They. Fucking. Are.

I don't want to hear about demand-driven nonsense. Films that make you think have always been less popular but they also will stand up to any movie made afterwards. People will always remember 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, Gone With The Wind, etc. but literally no one is going to give a flying shit about Infinity War after the fact. Disney/Marvel is built on cheap comedy, generic one-dimensional characters, a heavy coating of CGI, and an incredibly basic storytelling; all to appeal to as much people as possible to make as much money as possible.

That is not an indicator of quality.

Disney is not interested in making quality content, at least not anymore. Yes, taking risks means taking a hit. Look at The Last Jedi. That movie was an absolute dumpster fire. But now I'm in the incredibly painful position of having to defend TLJ because at least they took risks with that movie, even if it didn't pan out. You can't win every time and that goes with film making. Part of taking risks means accepting a possible loss, but when you take a risk and it turns out positive, the reward is far worth playing it safe. Hell, making a huge growing cinematic universe with Marvel was a risk in and of itself, it's never been done before in film history (and if it was done before, definitely not on this scale).

But now they can just churn out shit five times a year expecting bigger and bigger box office numbers, and other companies/studios follow suit. Why bother doing anything different when you can just copy Disney and rake in the dough? And yes, half of us have seen those other films you listed, and they're good. But of course no one is going to discuss them. Because the majority of movie-goers are brainless dipshits who just want to see explosions and titties and monsters and robots in a giant two hour orgy on nonsense.

Where did I say quality? I called the Disney/Marvel movies junk food earlier on. This is the problem with some of you. You don’t read what people are posting and go on a rant.

And Hollywood is very much a demand driven business. If Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants became a runaway box office smash, we’d have coming of age chick flicks instead of cape movies.

You want a higher quality movie experience? Either don’t go to superhero movies or start adding riskier movies to your weekends. Just don’t expect Eisner to start putting out better movies because you want him to.

Nobody is contesting the fact that these movies make money. In fact, I'd argue that's precisely why they warrant a lot more criticism than normal because other studios are starting to replicate the shared cinematic universe formula in order to catch the crumbs. Quite poorly too, I might add.

It's all well and good to say speak with your wallet, and not with your mouth, and yeah, that's partly true. But if you don't at least try and point out to people that these films only exist to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and original titles should be experienced too, then you're not helping the industry explore new avenues either, and you're just as complacent in the saturation of garden-variety blockbusters in the marketplace.

Did my post change your mind in any way? What makes you sure that you will change anyone else’s mind?
