Last December, we conducted a poll to choose the style of moderation that our staff would follow. The three types that were up for a vote were:

Quote
  • Strict System - Under this system of moderation, all rules will be enforced more heavily with a clear, concrete moderation process when it comes to warnings and bans (This process would be shared with the community once it is developed). While we will not become Waypoint and just ban without letting you know ahead of time that you are breaking the rules - there would be far less verbal warnings being given out before we actually take moderation action. Essentially: You know the rules, you follow the rules, or you lose privilege to post on the forums.
  • Lax System - Similar to what we have now, this system would take a more relaxed route to enforcing the rules, with moderation decisions less concrete. While there would be a suggestion moderation process, any punishments would ultimately come down to the Moderator that is online and handling the problem, along with the severity of the rule break, and whether or not there are alternatives to bans available
  • Hybrid System - This would use both the strict and lax systems, and apply them to different rules for the website. For example, Personal Attacks/Graphic Content/Harassment would fall under the Strict System - you know that it is not allowed, and the moderation process for handling them is concrete and clear. Issues like spam and shitposting, however, would fall under the Lax System - it comes down to the moderator's discretion as to how it is dealt with*

In the poll, Hybrid won with 61.4% - Since then, it has been how we wrote our rules and defined the moderation.

Recently, it has come to the staffs attention that this system may not be the best for our site, and that the punishments that accompany it are too relaxed, especially for repeat offenders. In light of this, we are once again polling the community on how they want their moderation to be. The three poll options will be as followed:

  • More Strict Moderation, with Harsher Punishments
  • Moderation as it currently is
  • More Relaxed Moderation, with Lesser Punishments

This poll will run until Thursday, alongside the Community Feedback thread.

Thank you for your input.

Remade and copy-pasted from Icy because he screwed up the poll.

I purposely left it up so people could copy and paste their responses into here and see why the original was locked. After a few hours I'll be removing it.

I'm going to vote strict.
I did say this:
The rules are fine, I'd prefer them to be stricter, but at this point you've tied your hands by letting the forum grow without being strict, so changing that now would cause a drop in activity.

However, even with a drop, should this place by some miracle, see an influx of new members, it'll be for the better that the rules are strict.

The mods need to be a bit more ready to act as well. And I don't mean "attentive".
Spoiler
I'm not looking at the incident yesterday when I told a mod that a new member was shitting up the forum and was probably an alt of a perma'd member, but they didn't believe me because I couldn't say who the alt belonged to.
But I'm totally looking at the incident yesterday when I told a mod that a new member was shitting up the forum and was probably an alt of a perma'd member, but they didn't believe me because I couldn't say who the alt belonged to.

The problem with the hybrid system is that it's actually just lax in disguise.

Rule #1, which regards personal attacks, harassment, and private information, is filed under "strict moderation"—who are you fooling? Everyone gets away with personal attacks and harassment on this forum. It's only after a fight has lasted a good 3-5 pages before a moderator finally comes in and does what? Says "Knock it off, or I'll give you a harmless freebie warning!"

yeah, real fucking strict

And now these idiots are voting for MORE leniency? What in the fuck?

I would like to commend the mods for banning Berzerk so swifly earlier today, however. I honestly expected you to just let him off the hook with a slap on the wrist like you do with everybody else.

He was asking for the name of the alt, Psy was doing three things at once, one being BF4 with me. He was just asking you to give the name of the Alt instead of saying "Go into the flood".

He had a brain fart then realized when he started looking, all while shooting Russians in our tank.

Sperged out, spamming a bunch of dumb "awoo" images everywhere and got banned for it.

I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that red x.

I linked him the thread where it was happening, much faster than giving him a name.
If he's able to act on a username, he's able to act on seeing the usename.

If mods can't moderate then it goes without saying, it's common sense, that we should have more mods.

None of this "lets bring in staff members that can't do anything because we're too spineless to deal with the problem" horseshit.

If he can bandy words with me over Skype while playing BF4 he can click a tab he undoubtedly had open to look at the first three threads to see a username he didn't recognise.
And I linked it to him literally within two minutes of telling him that it was happening.
Then I got told "it's not an alt", despite all the evidence saying it was, which I had already explained.

>I link the thread and detail the situation
>Psy is responding in good time over Skype

[04/09/2015 23:05:44] Psy: I'm shooting people right now, can I have the information in retard format because I cannot glean stuff from this pls

This stuff probably needs to go into the feedback thread.
If the stuff over the spoilers wasn't enough, this is the perfect example of "we need more mods".

You guys can discuss issues with the rules/moderation/staff in either thread. Just remember to keep it clean.

Also, thanks Cheat for telling me to do something before explaining how you want it.

You're not a mod and no one is being uncivil, stop pretending to be important.
A reminder 16 posts into a thread where a lot of people are going to want to express their opinions is the most useless thing you can post.

Byrne, I didn't say anyone was being uncivil. Just a reminder, the same way there was one in Cheat's OP over in the feedback thread.

I'm well aware that I'm not a mod, just a reminder so that one of them doesn't have to come in here and clean shit out.

Look, I'm not saying you didn't give him what he needed, I'm saying at that time, he wasn't catching on he was getting really confused at first.

getting this
Spoiler
Quote
[04/09/2015 23:01:57] Byrne 'Megane': They know the forum, the users, have a grudge and apparently someone tried to get them "unbanned"
[04/09/2015 23:02:02] Byrne 'Megane': What more evidence is there?
With no name of the alt all while in the middle of something was confusing him.

He caught on quickly, because he was told that it wasn't an alt, whoever said that didn't do their homework, or the IP from the Uni (Hiding his IP with the whole Unis IP was throwing them off or something) just confused him so he relayed that message in the chat.

Then, upon actually figuring out it is indeed Dustin's alt, he was already dealing with it while still talking to you.

He's not going to be super fast on everything and I don't know why everyone is expecting every mod to be like a fucking robot on this.

Spoiler
That being said, I'm not against opening the mod team up to willing people. Theres a lot of people I'd like on the mod team, or something to help them with

For OT, or rather, more on topic than this, I think the moderation is fine as it is.

That account was approved because it was a unique IP that belonged to a Uni. Not exactly uncommon from some of our users who live at school.

It wasn't until after it started posting shit about members that Dustin disliked that we could see it was his alt.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Aside from staff being (seemingly) afraid to do things that could potentially 'ruin their name', i dont really see any problems with things as they are.

Maybe its just my perfectionism asking for perfection regarding staff efficiency >.>

I think we need to work on consistency; however, most of what is moderated is considered on a case by case basis, and is really situational. I do believe that the harassment rule needs an amendment to include a harsher punishment for harassing users for being suicidal. Suicidal posts should be taken very seriously, and reported immediately.

I could put my two cents in, I suppose.

There was a situation last week with users posting their IPs. Kitsune and I argued that it was close enough to revealing personal information and that it probably shouldn't have been allowed. We were overruled, but not really convinced. It seemed... inconsistent at best.

I wouldn't mind slightly stricter moderation, as long as it's not too strict.

I think what wasn't discussed about this is the possibility of nonmembers finding these posted ip addresses and utilize that information.
