I played vanilla for a while but it was a grind fest and I got bored. Started playing some private servers and I found an amazing one, played there for like a year straight, but then they had issues and had to shut down.
It was so sad when they closed ; _ ;

they have a 1-20 trial with which you can experience a little taste of the early leveling experience

It's probably the most noob-friendly and accessible MMO. However if you're looking for something with actual substance EVE is a better bet. It's pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum though so it doesn't attract the hordes of people that WOW does.

Well there's GW2. You do have to pay for the box game but after that you're done. No paid expansions either, just free content updates. They make their money from microtransactions (purely cosmetic)
