Why can't developers compress downloads?

This has been a big problem here lately IMO. Was just reading around IGN and saw an article on the COD Infinite Warfare download size. Know what it is? 130GB! ONE HUNDRED THIRTY FUCKING GIGABYTES. What the fuck. Now that's including MW Remastered with it, but that doesn't matter. Same for Halo 5, I haven't checked, but I think it's also around 100GB. There is absolutely no reason games should take up this much space. The Witcher 3 with all extra content downloaded is just under 70GB.

Compressing and unpacking textures is difficult to do, and with data caps and downloading speeds increasing each year there's no real incentive for producers to do so, not to mention it provides an incentive for customers to preorder and pre-load.

This is one of the things that kept me from switching to PC for so long. I hate digital, but console games are basically digital downloads with a physical license checker nowadays.

Battlefield 4 with it's patches and DLC rounds off to around 100GB. That's a fifth of my console's internal memory.

I dislike that the current gen consoles are favouring gamers who live in urban centres who have access to 4G/20Mbs+ internet so downloading 4GB patches isn't that big of a deal. Meanwhile in bumfuck nowhere, Wales, I'm stuck with waiting a few hours to a fucking day for it to download with a psuedo-internet blackout.

At this rate, I'd rather go back to LA Noire's 3-disc system than this migration to digital copies.

Consoles these days are PC's without all the bells and whistles of PC's. It's the only way they can keep up (and aren't doing so).

Now, due to the hdd size on PS4, I have to wait for a dozen patches to install every time I want to play a new game or one I had to delete to make room for others. It's ridiculously overcomplicated and drawn out.

It's due to a number of things. Be it the games getting rushed out early for patches, stuff they couldn't make when it hit gold, or community complaints. That and they simply can't' fit everything on one disk as the technology grows.

Halo 5 is around 93GB, I had to delete all my 360 backwards compatible games for it.....

I have no fucking idea why MS didn't keep the detachable HDD from the 360, having an internal HDD means I either have to get an external to move shit around or I have to start deleting games. Not to mention since I got one of the older XB1's there's only 500GB so that's about five or six games, whereas my 120GB for a 360 had a huge library and I still have plenty of room left over.

There really is no excuse other than what Turkey has said: To make money. God I want another market crash so bad....

Unless you're buying a 7th gen port, they can be as small as 2gB sometimes.

games got bigger because they were no longer being held back by hardware that was over a decade old

Downloading a full game on on the 360 is like 10 gigabytes at the most. What the hell happened?

The DVDs that X360/ PS3 games were printed on could only store about 6GB of data. Blu-Ray discs can store about 45GB. That, combined with the increased quality of textures, audio, and so forth mean games are a lot bigger. Factor in DLC and endless title updates and games are pretty big.

It's hardly unexpected. Every jump of generation makes games a lot bigger; cartridges could store a few hundred MB or something, CDs could store something similar, or maybe 2GB (A bit fuzzy on specifics) which is why a lot of PS1 games came on fifteen million discs. As hardware and storage capabilities increase, so do the space required for software storage.

Console developers have never been as good as PC ones.

To my knowledge the xbox is also the only console that allows you to use third party external hard drives for it. So you can grab a cheap 3tb seagate and use that if you want.
