Will the story and characters make sense even if I skip spin-offs and 2/3/5?

There isnt much of a overarching story after 1, 2 and 3. First game is the setup for events and characters, 2 is the follow up event and 3 takes place in the same time as 2. 4 and 5 are mostly focused on characters dealing with Umbrella remnants.

6 is like a mash up of characters dealing with umbrella remnants while introducing a side character from 2 and the son of a major character from multiple games.

So really play them in order if you become interested in the characters and some minor sub plots.

If 7 drew you in, I highly recommend the 1 remake. You'll see the significance of the ending of the 7th one, as well as the start of everything. Plus they don't have tank controls.

Just to confirm: Resident Evil 2 is NOT Resident Evil Revelations 2? Steam seems to be missing a couple of the core games.

The only non-spinoff RE games with subtitles are 3 and 7. Revelations is a different branch of the franchise.

All of the core games are good with the exception of 6, code Veronica is pretty good as well.

The remake of re1 is arguably the best in the series and zero has the same style with a new mechanic thrown in. The tank controls are actually pretty lit once you get used to them in the first 3 games.

The first three games are classics and I highly recommend them. Zero was also very good.

Re4 was a huge departure for the series with an over the shoulder camera and more emphasis on combat, it's also my personal favorite. Re5 and re6 tried to change up this formula and it lead the series away from its survival horror roots.

Re5 is decent and worth a playthrough, especially with co op.

Re6 is the culmination of all the bad ideas they threw in over the years. It looks great, plays a bit smoother and does away with some of the irritating inventory management problems, but Christ is the story bad. It's honestly just a shout out to all the core characters from the previous games and does so many over the top, jump the shark moments that it's hard to take remotely seriously. It somehow manages to be pretty boring as well.

Re7 was fucking fantastic.

As for the spin offs, code Veronica was pretty solid, used the same tank controls of the first three games and gives a lot of background on the founding members of umbrella.

Outbreak 1 and 2 were shit, revelations 1 was shit, haven't played revelations 2.

So for now I bought the remake and 4. Considering Revelations 1 or 2, and hunting down a copy of 2.

Sounds like 1/2/4/7 are the most highly praised ones in this thread, though I think I'll try to play the series in order.

Fans that follow the series: is 7 intended to be a soft reboot sort of thing? Is Ethan going to be a new character or was he just involved in 7 only?

No one knows yet about 7 really. He might be involved, but it was more or less kind of a soft reboot. Keeping mostly independent of other RE games until the very end run.

What was that gun that they dropped to Ethan at the end of the game? Is that some sort homage to a BFG/RYNO/etc. type gun from the rest of the series?

1 2 3 - Outbreak and Zero are good

4 is that start of the downfall

5 is memey

6 is a good game but a shit RE
