When taking into account the standards they set at their time, I would consider Halo 2 pretty monumental. It had a booming community, an excellent expansion of the already popular universe (albeit a bad ending), and was essentially the first iteration of most of Xbox Live's features.

Halo 2 or 3, probably. Dark Souls may be one of my personal favorites, but it definitely hasn't had the following or impact that other games have had. Isolating one or two games as standouts of the decade is a pointless effort, anyway.

Sure, absolutely. Didn't people get super butthurt about Halo 2's ending, though?

But yeah, that's great and all, but I still don't think "kickstarting online multiplayer" is a good enough GotD seller.

Had Halo never been a franchise, online multiplayer would've exploded anyway with some other series. Giving Halo all the credit for winning that lottery (so to speak) seems silly and arbitrary to me.

If you're solely talking about how people didn't like the ending it's because the Halo fanbase is a bit on the spectrum. One of the biggest complaints at the time is that you didn't play as the MC during the last level in addition to the fact that the games last cutscene ended on a cliff hanger.

I don't think Halo 2 belongs anywhere on a "best game of the decade" list though. The campaign for the game is an unfinished mess and while online multiplayer was kind of a new thing for consoles (it had been done before on the Dreamcast) it had been a staple of PC gaming for years at that point.

It isn't just a cliffhanger, it's a hilariously awkward and abrupt cliffhanger. Like if you're at a concert, it's your favorite band, you're enjoying yourself, and then they just stop playing halfway through a song and leave.

Now you might be thinking, "yeah, but that's what cliffhangers are for: postponing the ending in order to build excitement." Except it's less "something exciting is going to happen, but you'll have to wait to see what it is!" and more "something exciting is happening, OH WAIT NO IT'S NOT". The video game equivalent of blue balls.

Also most of the missions are dull, drawn out, and repetitive.

I kind of thought we were mostly referring to consoles, because of the disparity in quality that existed (and still exists to a lesser extent).

Including PC games, I'd probably throw World of Warcraft into the mix, though it started slightly outside of the past decade.
