dark souls
it's absolutely brilliant and i enjoyed it so much so that it's one of the only games in recent times that i bothered playing more than once, i think i played it at least 4 times over and for me that's a big deal considering i can barely get through games once

you should definitely try out fallout 3 afterwards but i've only played new vegas, you should play that too it's pretty good

I'd agree on Vegas. Aside from the exploration, Vegas does everything better than 3. The gunplay, crafting, story, dialogue (writing and voice acting) quests and choices and factions system are all much better than their predecessor.

Just direct him to fill out the First Chapter of the Wasteland Survival Guide. That should get him some starters.

The beauty of this game is finding out how to tame the Wasteland yourself.
