Levels, locations, towns, cities, arenas, and all other manners of sectioning off "areas" of games. Whether it be the atmosphere of the area, the enemies you fight, the storyline that led you up to that point, or any other reason.
My opinion will and most likely forever will reside with Ash Lake from Dark Souls 1. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing Ash Lake for the first time.
Stepping into Ash Lake just gave you such a huge sense of size. Like, you started off in Firelink Shrine next to the branches of a single huge tree. When you make it to Blighttown, you find a hole in that tree and manage to make your way inside. There's an ENTIRE LEVEL that takes place solely in the trunk of the tree as you work your way down to the basin.
Then you leave the tree, the choral music hits you, and you see an underground lake the size of an ocean. A hydra's sitting near the shoreline, previously a boss whose massive size could span the entire length of one of the only other bodies of water you've encountered thus far, and he's this tiny little thing in this massive body of water.
And there are thousands of other trees, stretching on as far as you could possibly see - farther than you could ever possibly imagine. All of them are the same size as the one tree that took you half the game to climb down.
Fuck, I love Ash Lake.

The Surface in Metro 2033, after reading the books beforehand and of course playing the game it was every bit as dangerous and stunning as I hoped it'd be. Especially in Ranger mode.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.
The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

I really liked Cappadocia in AC Revelations. A small city inside a fucking massive cave.
Actually, come to think of it, Revelations' entire map was pretty great. Constantinople was a fantastic setting.

They say you are what you eat, but I don't remember eating mYsELF
The first time you get a proper big view of Columbia in Bioshock Infinite was so amazing. Exploring it was even more so. The opening couple of hours of that game are something I'll never forget.
Ravenholm from HL2 - Loved it because I hated it. I'm not easily scared by video games, but there was something about Ravenholm that was just intensely creepy. I don't know if I'll ever experience an area in a game again where I'll rush through it as fast as I can with my eyes nearly closed every time I play though it.
And getting out of Ravenholm was frighteningly relieving..
Dragon Aerie from DS2 - I found myself appreciating the environments in DS2 much more than I would have in other games, simply because of how attentive I was through my entire playthrough. There was no half-assed getting through half of the game without even noticing, I surely have most of the game etched into my brain by now... so it probably won't come as a surprise that after leaving the dank, claustrophobic shit hole of Aldia's Keep, getting the elevator ride and running out into the open Dragon Aerie with the wind from the Dragons' wings blowing all around...I was pretty appreciative.
