Blowing directly into the disc tray seemed to do the job, for now.

I fucking hated it... Halo 2 really tightened it for me.
Tightened what exactly
my anus by how well it was

But (heh) no, on consoles I just hated Halo 1's combat. Like, I didn't mind gun wise, but the melee was shit, as well as the vehicle driving. Nothing felt like it had weight or power to it.

I've started to take notes as I play, so I can remember to say everything I have to say. I'd like this to be at least a little bit more organized/thorough than my Half-Life 2 thread, in the sense that I won't just make a bunch of reactionary posts--everything is gonna be a little more calculated, I guess.

Anyway, right away, I gotta commend the game for how they handled players who use inverted controls. I mean, it's one thing to have the option, and another to actively acknowledge them in-game. What sucks is that, if you want to change these settings at any point, you have to save and quit first. That's kinda dumb.

Now, for the actual game... Um, well, I kinda gotta agree with what Luciana said about the combat. It's not terrible--but it's not great, either. I don't feel anything when I'm shooting these guys--especially if I'm using an automatic weapon, which sucks, because those tend to be my favorite weapons to use. I disagree with her when it comes to melee combat, however--I actually find it really fun to just bash elites in the skull when they try to get near me. Backstabbing in particular has always been one of my favorite maneuvers, and it's just as fun in single player as it is in multiplayer.

As much as people don't like it in MP, I really like the shield mechanic. In combat situations, it can get pretty intense when your shields are drained, and you have to run yourself to a safe spot to let your shields regenerate. It adds a layer of depth to the combat that I don't think many people think about.

I'm also liking the weapons so far, mostly. The SMG (or is it an assault rifle?... I already forget) blows dick, though. In the sense that it's not really that fun to use. I tend to prefer the pistol (because OP), the needler (because OP), and the plasma pistol. The plasma rifle is okay, but it's kinda boring. Grenades are awesome--I've been following the manual's advice to use them on jackals a lot. I also didn't know CE had plasma grenades--I thought those were introduced in Halo 2. They were one of my favorite things, so I'm glad they're here.

I can tell Cortana's gonna get annoying. Her voice actress is fine and all--it's just the fact that she tends to state the obvious a lot ("This cave wasn't formed naturally! That means it leads somewhere!") and I can pretty much tell that's how it's gonna be with her for the rest of the game.

Fuck the warthog. I hated this godforsaken thing in MP, and I still hate it now. What kind of fucknut control scheme is that, anyway? It's seriously the worst--especially when trying to drive through narrow spaces, which I just got done doing. Plus, I hate the fucking AI that's supposed to be helping me out. He doesn't shoot at what he needs to shoot at, and I end up just taking matters into my own hands. Not fun.

I'm afraid the graphics are going to numb my brain for how simple and bland they are, but I'll muscle through it.

Oh, and I noticed that there's only ten chapters. That's pretty short--unless they get longer. I'll definitely be able to get this game done rather quickly.

There are some boring long levels (The Library will put you to sleep), and yeah, vehicle control in Halo 1 is cancer.

Also, the cave thing is about as infamous as Halo 3's "To war..." quote.

Could I ask you (or someone) to list out all the chapter titles for me? I'd like to make a progress bar in the OP.

I ask because if there happen to be any spoilers in the titles, I don't really care to know them, let alone look them up myself.
Thank you.

There's no lunge in Halo 1 you actually have to hit the enemy to do damage

IMO I would realistically expect the aliens to be chosen by the forerunners, and humanity would have been attacking them because muh butthurt

Actually, that would have been an original idea. I notice a trend in sci-fi these days. Humanity always seems to land as "muh chosen ones" in some form or another. Portrayed as inherently "good" or "okay," or, "worthy."

Mass Effect was another series guilty of falling into that gay ass cliche of a trap as well.
I was actually thinking this it's always the good ole' humanity that saves the day with kindness and honesty, tbh i would see humanity as the greedy powerful types

Like I said. "Muh chosen ones" complex.

In Halo, in all instances in the lore, humanity had apparently done nothing wrong and was seemingly portrayed as the small kid on the block while everybody else was the big bad bullies to them.

And in Mass Effect, especially in 3 where shit became big time Earth centric, Humanity got themselves flagged as genetically superior by the Reapers and became the prime conversion target.

I don't think I've ever played a game or read a book where Humanity didn't have some sort of pivotal central role because of some special innate and invisible quality.

And it's kinda gay, the more I spot it frankly.

Yeh. Bungie kind of started that trend in games. In fairness, humanity got fucked over by the forerunners before the firing of the array.

But I basically rewrote half my own thing when I realise I was falling into this trap. Then again, my human faction only really got powerful because they arrived in the middle of a war and ended up ring the influencing factor for one side.

Okay, here's a very brief run down of modern-26th centry lore. It has been mentioned, like, twice, so don't think much of it.

Basically, expansion continues a would be expected. We begin colonising other planets in our solar system, so far so good. Anyway, eventually, pure ideological differences between groups called Koslovics and Friedans emerge as both terror organisations begin their own war. Basically space nazis and space communists. This culminates in the UN organising into the UNSC, and setting up the UNSC Marine Corps. Their first deployment is on Mars, which sets the stage for things to come.

After the UNSC's total victory, things progress relatively quietly. In the 2300's, FTL (Wormhole) travel is discovered and within the next two hundred years, we colonise over 800 star systems. In te late 2490's, the outer colonies, often used by the inner colonies as a cheap source of materials and food, begin to rebel at this unfair treatment. This rebellion is the insurrection, and soon threatens to spread through the empire right to earth- which is why the Spartans were created. In 2525, the planet Harvest makes first contact with aliens, things go sour and a three-decade long war ensues.

And absolutely none of this is brought up in the games. Furthermore, the only time any of the expanded universe has been introduced to the games has been since 343 took over with Halo 4. Bungie basically didn't care, so you'll never find any of the really interesting stuff mentioned in their games.
You are the first person to ever explain that lore so freaking clearly to me without making it convoluted.

Thank you.

I posted a link to the actually timeline that was based off if you want to have a look in more detail ^ ^

I can't think of one Bungie game I've played, where the friendly AI aren't absolutely useless pieces of shit, especially with vehicles. Just wait until the level where a few Marines drive Ghosts, you'll die a billion times. When they operate the Warthog's Chaingun in any Halo, be prepared for them to shoot to the side of their target almost the whole time, and if it's a vehicle, when they eventually do kill the driver, they'll send a few hundred more shots down range and blow it up, just to make sure you can't grab it and solo the rest of the level.

Then again, even in 343 Halo, the Spartan IV's and Marines need a good amount of babysitting to survive a small group of grunts with the dreaded Plasma Pistol.

I remember bungie hyping up marine driving AI before Reach coming out, claiming that you'd be able to sit on a gun and let the marines drive.

Apparently, at least one spartan didn't get the memo...

I don't understand why they can't copy over the Covenant AI code for driving and change the faction allegiance. Can't be that hard, right?

Covenant AI are just as bad at driving, it's just that, IIRC, they're spawned away from Covenant infantry to avoid splattering in most cases. If you play Firefight on Reach's Corvette and Beachead maps, you can see the Wraiths splatter about 20 friendly units in a single game.

The reason you don't see Elites splattering each other is (in Halo 1 at least), they gave them a smaller hitbox for vehicles, so Ghosts could cruise over them without getting splattered, despite being taller than the Master Chief and Marines, who can't avoid it, even by crouching. On Assault on the Control room, the first Wraith would sometimes teamkill that group of Jackals that hang around the Outcrop behind it.

Kat's driving was fucking ridiculous. Every fails of the Weak episode, you'd see somebody make the mistake of operating the Gunner seat on Tip of the Spear, and immediately be punished harder than missing a Rest with Jigglypuff on Super Smash Bros.
