Halo 2 is my favorite, and is probably the best for its monumental impact on multiplayer. I also enjoyed the ending, but I think that's a minority opinion. I'd probably rank the original trilogy as equal for varying reasons.

1 = 2 = 3 > ODST = Reach > 4 > 5

reach had the best campaign experience (note the distinction between experience and story)

h3 had the best multiplayer

An ideal Halo Game would have a campaign with the story of Halo 4 and the level design off Halo 3 and Reach while the multiplayer would probably be Halo 5's gampeplay but the content level of Reach and Halo 5's forge, but also with terrain edditng.

I'd personally go a step further and have equipment as it functioned in in Halo 3, but have at least a few of them work as armor abilities (i,e a jetpack but with limited fuel by default, or a Jackal Shield that breaks eventualy). I'd also include a playlist with loadouts, and maybe even a system between Reqs and Ordinance but not make it terrible.

My unlock system could still allow for microtransactions exept it would be non-shit:
Leveling is similar to Halo Reach and 4 With you unlocking default variants of weapons along a set path as you level. Aethstetic customization and Weapon varients would have various unlock conditions such as
-Merit (i.e. Completing the Campaign on legendary, certain achievements or challenges)
-Unlocking with credits
-Unlocks via leveling
-Microtransactions (There would be limits on what you could buy though. Example; of John's Armor was the prize for beating legendary, you wouldnt allow that to be bought)

There is no matchmaking ban, the punnishment instead is that you are put into a matchmaking pool where the avalable maps and modes are
-Spiker starts on Valhalla in Halo 3
-DMR starts on Valhalla in pre TU Halo 4
-Spiker on Sword base playing Hog ball with 4x Oversheild and no boarding.
-Assasination Tower
And you have to complete 10 matches without quitting to get back into normal matchmaking

I had the most good times in Reach. Best forge and customs experience (Halo 5 might have better options but it took too long to get them and now customs are dead), best art style, invasion, best campaign (from a gameplay perspective, story was unremarkable), good firefight customisability and good theatre. I also really like the OST.

That's not to say I don't have gripes. Notice I barely mentioned the matchmaking side of things. I do think Halo 3 had a better multiplayer experience in MM, but Halo Reach just feels better as a complete package.

Halo 3, despite having major problems with the game I still had great fun playing the MP and custom games. I played a decent amount of Reach but I found the maps to be shit and for 343, they don't exist.

Halo 3 had a significantly more polished multiplayer. Did you play Halo 2 MP? Either you dominated the enemy team, or you were spawn trapped the entire match, or you were standbying.

That doesn't reflect my experience playing Halo 2 at all. I don't see a point in arguing which is better, but there's a reason Bungie spent a significant amount of post-launch content to Halo 2 maps and gametypes.

I enjoyed both immensely.

H3 was my favourite, had the most fun playing couch co op and it was my introduction to map making, Reach had the best forge, and I love it for that.
Halo CE was a fun game, but it's soooo outdated and I burned out on it because of the lack of content.
Halo 2 was ok, just not good, ODST was fun, 4 Was ok at best.
4 had a great story, just everything else was hot garbage.
I never played 5, but wars was great for a console rts.
