Can you go 20 minutes without saying Consent? No? Got it.
Considering that it's the basis of my argument? No, probably not.

Can you go 20 minutes without saying some incredibly stupid shit?

No?

Got it.

I'm having trouble reconciling your acceptance of NPC invasions (which do happen at specific points in the game) and human invasions.
I mean, I stated precisely why in that very post, so, okay, you want me to just repeat myself?

NPC invasions are okay, because they're just enemies. That's what they're supposed to do. The Goomba on 1-1 doesn't have to get your consent to kill you--it's a non-sentient non-organism. A piece of code. An obstacle specifically designed for you to avoid. That's all it is.

It's not a human being with sentience. If it were, it probably would have to reconsider its life choices a little bit. Maybe it shouldn't be trying to bump into Mario after all, because that shit's rude as fuck.

But nope--it's not even close to sentient. It's an enemy in the game put there for you to get rid of.

Likewise, in Dark Souls, if an NPC invades you, the same logic applies. Human beings are capable of reason--NPCs follow a specific protocol, and you as a player are meant to overcome them as obstacles.

Probably went on too long there, but whatever.
Quote
It's not done to fuck anyone over, it's done as a challenge for both participants. The invader is put at a significant disadvantage and cost; all duel etiquette goes out the window if you're trying to clear an area and you get invaded. You can gank, run, ambush, heal, etc., and the host reaps significantly more reward than the invader -- not to mention that if you get killed by an invader, you can 'indict' them so that they get added to a list of players to be targeted by one faction of players.
None of this matters. I didn't ask for the fucker to invade me--I just want him to fuck off and let me play the fucking game. Can I just DO that?

Sure, I can play offline. But what if I want to play with friends online, without getting invaded?

Guess I'm shit out of luck. Bad design.
Quote
There are also several indicators that you're going to be invaded, well in advance of the dialog box telling you, such as fog walls and some PvP or interactive items (white sign soapstone, namely) becoming unavailable.
I want a box that says "accept" or "decine" on it.

Good thing to note.
I never actually said I was a fan of the series. Yet you assumed so just because I defend a mechanic.

I swear, this guy cries over the most stupid bullshit. Don't like it, don't play it. It's that simple. End of story.

It's part of the game. You don't know who may invade your game and attack you. Having to have your permission to join defeats its purpose.

Then it's a shitty purpose, and it should be defeated.

NPC invasions are still a thing. That's all you need.

If you're playing with a friend the game becomes significantly easier. Invasions balance that out, though they're rare. Just like how powerful weapons are also slower and thus leave you open to attack, the ability to summon humans or NPCs to assist you have the downside of allowing sporadic challenges through invasions.

Speaking of co-op, which platform are you going to play it on? I'm down to play sometime. I think I'd have to make a new character to meet level requirements though.

Most people wouldn't agree with you. You should just stop getting offended by playing with other people and seeing boobs in video games. You'll be alright. Play offline if you really can't stand it. It's part of the game. And in the end, no matter how much you cry, it won't change. Looks like your SOL.

Oh well. Morality trumps artistic vision.

Would solely having NPC invasions not balance that out? Why must there be human player invasions? Why is it so horrible to have player invasions be taken out in favor of a consensual "accept/decline" type duel system?

PS3, but sorry, I'm afraid I can't do that. Co-op opens the doors to invasion, and I'm not cool with that.

The benefits exist specifically to offset the risk of invasion.
Bad design.

If invasions were comprised of NPC characters alone, then it wouldn't be a problem--it would be like a random encounter in your average RPG. But instead, we have real human beings actively fucking each other over for "fun."

Awful.

Everyone should hate that.
Why is an NPC invasion different if the designer intentionally put it in to thwart you for being human? The devs would want to have made the NPCs act as human as possible, that's what AI strive to do.

Is it because you agree there is a degree of consent to surprises and unknown challenges when you choose to put the game in and play it.

Do you just dislike the fact that players have freedom to win a zero-sum game? A definitive winner and loser in exchanges are sort of ubiquitous to competitiveness. And Dark Souls is a competitive environment.

Like Flee said, there are trade-offs for advantages in games. Humanity gives you luck, buddies, and estus. But also risks intruders. Chaos Weapons shouldn't get their max damage without their 10 humanity to add risk. No one should get free reign to summon allies without suspecting enemies.

No because the AI aren't advanced enough and players can be far more inventive with their builds and play styles that they overall produce a much more diverse experience than scripted bots would.

If from could have put in bots that were indistinguishable from players they would have. The point of a bot is to emulate some asshole invading you. If that is fine with you then I do not understand why you choose to let the game creators fuck you over in an identical way rather than get fucked over by a player and at least have someone get some enjoyment out of the situation.

"As human as possible" is still not human. They'll never be sentient--therefore, they'll never require your consent.

And like I said, if the enemies were NPCs, I wouldn't care.

Having sentience gives you the responsibility to distinguish between right and wrong--or, in this case, to evaluate whether you have the right to force yourself into another person's game, when they never asked for it.

Just because the game gives you the ability doesn't give you the right. I can ball up my fist and swing it in whatever direction I want, but my right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins.

Not in the boxing ring. Dark Souls is one big boxing ring, with NPCs and a story. I think you really need to reconsider what the purpose of these functions are before saying they are flawed. They're only as flawed as a pair of scissors are for cleaning your ears. You're looking at them wrong.

Games are supposed to entertain, yes. And dying and challenges aren't immediate fun. But being able to overcome challenges and adversity in a pessimistic aesthetic is what distinguishes art from Angry Birds.

Dark Souls has a very loose co-op with friends anyway. You have to each buy a ring, then change the name, then coordinate where you want to summon them, then go there, then wait, then summon them. It's rather tedious. Besides, co-op PvE in my opinion ruins the challenge of Dark Souls. It's much better to go solo.

Yeah but that doesn't make them flaws. They may alienate some people but it was definitely a daring concept that has worked, and fostered an online competitive community.

But I guess that's the everlasting problem of trying to assess media. Certain things will appeal to different people. You can only ever truly judge complete failures like Sonic 06 where things aren't even functional.

You guys should at least let Verb try the game and experience it, along with being invaded by NPC's (it's exactly the same as humans) to see how his opinion changes.

Btw Verb, I think you can only get invaded when you're human, so since you're playing offline, be mindful of that. They drop some gear you might like. It's Fashion Souls after all.

Mechanically, them invading is the same as a real person. The only difference is the skill and how they act.
