Is it not overly entitled to join a game where you can be matched with anyone, by design, and expect to matched with those only you consent with?
There is absolutely nothing "entitled" about not wanting to play with other people when you're not fucking asking for it.

That's, like, the exact opposite of entitled.
Kinda like someone inviting themselves over, you probably don't want them there, and they shouldn't be there, it's an invasion of privacy in a way. Yeah, I'm okay to agree in this. I never liked the gimmick anyway.

You either die a hero or live long enough to become Mythic..
The whole goal of the Invasion system in Dark Souls 2 is so players have another challenge in the form of online play, it is literally called "invasion". I don't remember anyone ever consenting to someone invading their land. It makes zero sense for you to be able to "pick and choose" who invades you.
That just means that the entire concept of player invasion is flawed as fuck and should be destroyed.
Quote
There is also NPC's who invade or come to your aid as well, it's not always online players.
This is the only acceptable form of invasion. If there's already NPC invasions, there is NO NEED for player invasions. If someone wants to join your game, they should have to request it from you first. That's how it should work.
Quote
Plus, they have the opposite to help you out during your time on Dark Souls 2. You can touch a sign on the ground and "pop!" A friend from another world comes to help you out. So it isn't all invading and killing eachother.
Doesn't matter. There's still invasions, and that's bad.

But you are asking for it, by playing the game when it's intentionally possible. What's entitled is choosing to play a game where it is meant to be possible to play with anyone, and expecting it to be how you want it.

As I said before, play specific modes where you get to decide, or don't play.

I've always felt that I'm explicitly consenting to invasions when using humanity in Dark Souls, and when using the beckoning bell in Bloodborne. If I'm really just not in the mood (say, after finally slogging through all of Blighttown) I'd just force quit from an invasion. Or use chameleon, ring of fog, or silver talisman and just hang out until they leave.

Which is nice and all, but it doesn't change the fact that the feature is still there. Unlike future installments like Bloodborne, the game doesn't ask you at the very beginning if you want to play on or offline. This is a flaw.

Wrong. Even if I was the greatest Dark Souls player of all time, and I just fucking slaughtered ANYBODY who dared to invade me, I would still think invasions are retarded.

You're not, though.

Is there a prompt that says, "xXSuperDaSPlayerXx wishes to invade you. Do you accept his challenge? [yes] [no]"

If not, then no, you are not explicitly consenting to anything. You're implicitly consenting by playing the game, and choosing not to be bothered by the fact that you can't decline invasions.

I'm not being pedantic--I don't think you can fuck around with words like "explicit" like that. You can argue all you want that you're implicitly consenting to the whole invasion system by purchasing the game and playing it, but then I would argue that that's far too nebulous to be considered a true statement of consent.

Bloodborne did the bare minimum of what I want. What I actually want is for invasions to be completely redone to be consensual. Instead of being dragged into the duel against your will, you get to decline people from invading you. You would not, however, be able to decline NPC invasions. Just player invasions. That's what I want.

No, it's not victim blaming. If you've made a conscious decision to play a game where you could be matched with anyone, despite not wanting to do exactly that, then you've only got yourself to blame. You deserve no sympathy.

Nothing's implicit. The game tells you very straightforwardly that use of humanity opens you to invasion and allows you to summon players or NPCs for help. If I choose to use the item, I am choosing to allow invaders. I feel like this discussion has been blown completely out of proportion, too; unless you're hanging around dueling locations, you're likely to be invaded maybe once or twice in your playthrough.

This logic would work if Dark Souls was exclusively a PvP multiplayer game, which it's not. Maybe someone wants to play the single player online experience without the possibility of getting invaded. They can't do that, and that's a problem with the game.

Doesn't make a lick of dfference to me. No one should get invaded at all, ever. Not even once. It just shouldn't be a part of the game.

You've still made the choice to play a game with that feature, knowing the feature exists and could happen. You've consented to that gameplay mechanic by playing the game.

It doesn't matter if the gameplay is exclusively PvP or not, the logic holds. Don't want it to happen? Don't play the game, or play it in a manner that prevents it from happening. Or mod it.

Also, the word invasion implies it's not meant to be the more consensual thing ever, it's an invasion...

It's obviously not broken though, it's intended by the developer. If you feel as if it shouldn't be there, but the developer feels it should, it's up to change it how you see fit. Also, there is most likely already a mod that does this, all you've got to do it download something or change some file settings, not difficult.

Exactly. The very concept shouldn't be a thing in a video game.
Even you must see that's a pretty silly statement. You're saying invasion as a concept should be removed from video games altogether? The civilization series is built on invasions, it's intentional, it's an interesting and entertaining game mechanic.

Yes, if it works like it does in Dark Souls. NPC invasions are okay.

Except it's not, because human beings are involved. They could have built the entire thing around NPC invasions instead, and it still would've made sense. But no--they have players do it, too. Terrible design.
