I'm new to the franchise and I'm having a lot of fun so far. One question I have is what do I do when I'm not battling in real time?
I mean other than set up trade routes, recruit forces and build/research new buildings? I feel like I always end my turn really quick

Make sure your units integrity is fine, make sure your control in the family tree isn't too high or low (you can read the bonus's), make sure your men's loyalty is good otherwise they'll break off.

Make sure your cities squalor/unhappiness isn't too bad. Put people in place for governors with bonus's, upgrade the said governors and generals.
