As a side note I don't think a game being released at launch is a valid excuse. Off the top of my head I can think of three games that released at launch (maybe 4, but I didn't pay attention to the 360 launch so I don't know if gears was actually a launch title or not) that were still good games.Halo:CE, SSBM, and Super Mario Sunshine.
I just think "panned" was a bit of an exaggeration.

I don't really think any of them are highly debatable. At the time they were released they were all good games. It's true that not all of them have aged gracefully though.

And Halo 1 flat-out sucked. Its multiplayer and its multiplayer alone carried it to its success. They were popular, sure, and lots of people liked them--but you already know that this does not make a game good.
I'm biased for Metroid, but I'd still say Metroid 1 has aged pretty well for an 8-bit game.NES games in general are timeless. The good ones, anyway.
Not sure how a game that was near universally panned got green-lit for a sequel, but ok.
I thought only good games deserve sequels.
