I just asked my Dad about it and he said you can't really add the new graphics and mechanics in a patch.
Boom. ^
>caring about graphics
>at all

You can definitely add new mechanics. DLC is made for that sort of thing.

That's the same thing though. Why would you force updates when you could just release a new thing totally updated?
Oh and the technical side of it would be a nightmare.
Because you could make it cheaper, for one thing. $60 a year vs., I don't know, $20 a year.

"but muh sustainable business model"

That's why it's a bad genre. They don't deserve to make as much money as they do.
Could they though?
Could they "just make it cheaper"?
I have no idea if they could personally.
iirc NHL series actually loses money or barely breaks even when they release games due to there not being a big enough crowd buying. I'm not certain about that but that could be a reason why the price is so high.

These aren't little things like adding new characters in Smash Bros.
This would be like totally overhauling the hit detection in the game and making you download that.

Graphics should be a thing if its a AAA game developer on a next gen console. Like it or not, it is an appealing aspect. A huge criticism of CoD is how bad it looks because of how old and bad the engine is.

Mechanics wise yeah. Patches can't bring that in. They can fine tune things, but that's about it. But you can't entirely add new things unless it's some expansion tier thing, which you'd need to pay for. But that's still just building on an old already locked in engine.

It's why Total War Rome 2 still has some ugly looking things, despite all the patches they did. It fixed a lot, but there is a reason Attila is better mechanically (it is said it's what Rome 2 should have been).

I don't see what's wrong with caring about graphics. Sure it doesn't make the game, but if it's nice to look at then it's a bonus. Ugly games kind of hamper my enjoyment a bit.

If the game the graphics are attached to is really good, yeah.

How realistic does it have to get before you say, "Okay, this is good enough for a sports game (that I'm not playing for the graphics anyway)"?

With sports games (in terms of FIFA and, also MLB The Show) it comes down to the very small details that all add up. You can get the general gist of something, but overall the package still fall apart because of the little things. It's the reason EA Sports NBA Live has failed twice now, and NBA 2K has been a success. Things like animations, physics, presentation, movement, sound effects, game mods and how much you can dive in, etc.

I wouldn't buy a really nice looking game just based on it's looks, though.

Why would you need to "overhaul" anything? The games aren't that broken, are they?

You'd be surprised. If you look at something like... Madden 08 to Madden 10, it's a huge difference.

Though I hate Madden to begin with.

Far Cry 2
Halo 5
Oblivion
Watch_Dogs
Advanced Warfare
All the assasins creed games

I don't really buy that many games I end up disliking. I mean, I used dislike in this case for stuff that was just plain awful to play. There's a couple like Dishonoured and Dark Souls where it was a great game but I just couldn't get into it, but I didn't dislike it. Just didn't get round to finishing it, stuff I didn't find notable in any way.

A couple years ago, I might have been able to give a nice list, but nowadays, I think it makes more sense to list genres instead, ranging from "I personally don't care for these kinds of games," to "why the fuck is this even a genre?"

1. Sports
2. Interactive movies
3. RTS/MOBA
4. MMORPGs
5. Survival horror
6. Racing
7. Beat 'em up/hack 'n' slash
8. First-person shooter
9. Any type of "simulation" game that doesn't actually simulate anything
10. Shoot 'em ups, with the exception of bullet hell

Dishonorable mention: Visual novels, life simulation, pornography
So...mostly everything?

‘The most inoffensive user on this website’ - Verbatim
-Halo 2
-SCAR
-Forza 5 (mostly for the unnecessarily jittery handling compared to previous Forza titles)
-Rayman: Raving Rabbids
-Super Mario Bros. 2
-Super Mario Bros. 3 (purely because it introduced the Koopalings and I resent that modern Nintendo party games are now plagued by those cancers)
-Marathon: Infinity
-Halo 4
-Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension
-Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (who'd have thunk)

I'm pretty sure that covers my most disliked games anyway.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
1. Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters
- Game is way too short, no memorable new characters, the weapons all sucked and weren't fun to use, and the game wasn't made by Insomniac. It also came out for the PSP before the PS2 which was something I didn't like.

2. Frontlines: Fuel of War
- Game had tons of potential and failed miserably in every category it delivered. When Halo and Call of Duty where in their prime in 2008-2009, this game was forgotten super quick, especially by me as I only played it for like a week and never touched it ever again.

3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- I was super excited for this game because I love MW2 a ton. I played MW3 and immediately I knew something was wrong with this game. It didn't have that authentic Infinity Ward feel to it because it wasn't the original team that made it. My friends and I went back to MW2 just a short time later.

4. Call of Duty: Black Ops
- This game's only redeeming factor, for me at least, is the zombies. Everything else about this game was just boring and not fun like the previous games but I'll admit this game was better than MW3.

5. Halo 4
- The only thing I enjoyed about this game was the story and that's it. Everything else with Halo 4 was just terrible. The multiplayer was even worse than Reach's, the maps sucked, the armor was butt ugly, previous game modes didn't come back, the new Forge mechanics were broken, and 343i's post-launch support was laughingly bad. I regret pre-ordering the Limited Edition of Halo 4 every day.

6. GTA: Liberty City Stories
- This game was a complete 180 turn from what San Andreas the year prior had and did to this franchise. Liberty City Stories didn't have a likable antagonist, story was extremely short, nearly every single feature that San Andreas had was nonexistent, and the game just looked downright ugly.

7. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
- Assault Horizon was a slap to the face to the fans of this series. The game didn't take place in Strangereal, the story wasn't nowhere near to being good, the new Dog-Fight mechanic was basically the game playing by itself, and the helicopter controls were awkward as hell.

8. Halo Wars
- I gave this game so many chances and tried to like it but it just never clicked for me. When my friends and I got Command and Conquer 3 on the 360, we never touched Halo Wars again. C&C 3 is just a so much better console RTS game than Halo Wars in every category.

9. Need For Speed: Carbon
- Lots of people say that this is the "last good NFS game" but its not. The last good one was Most Wanted from 2005 which came out a year prior to Carbon. Carbon was soooooo easy its a joke. I beat the entire game in 2 hours on my very first playthrough whereas with Most Wanted took me around 2 weeks.

10. Grand Theft Auto 4
- When I do miss some of the online features this game had, Rockstar focused too much on the realism and graphics of this game and it made it boring. The single-player felt like a chore to play through, Niko Bellic is a winy bitch, there was literally nothing to do, and the overall craziness and ridiculousness of previous GTA games was not there.

I don't buy games often enough to do that.

1. VNs.
not even video games.

2.  Puzzle games. Including platformers. Including survival horror.
They are either very abstract like Tetris or Bejeweled or they are infinitely unreplayable.

3. FPS.
Death of arena shooters is death of any reason to keep this competitive.

4. MMOs.
Running and farming.

5. Simulators.
Jokes that stop being funny after 5 minutes.

Rogue-likes and MOBAs are the future, fam.
