The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

the only reason why i don't like mods is because you're screwing with someone else's art
even if the devs intended to add more to the game, i think the finished product should stay the finished product

Would this still apply if it's broken and has no post-release support? (I.e. "Unofficial Patches")

for me, yes

a game that's broken on release is probably not a game worth playing anyway

I never get your stance on mods, because to me, it's like this: You go to the store and buy a wheelbarrow, but when you get back you notice that it was sold to you with a bad wheel. You already have a spare wheelbarrow wheel, so you replace it, making the original product better. What's so bad about additions? About improvements?

I see it like an old or partially unfinished painting being restored.

But then as Verb says, a half arsed product is not really worth buying.

But if you restore an old painting, it ruins it for everyone. There are unlimited possible copies to a video game, choosing to mod yours only affects you.

officially endorsed mods, i have no problem with
i don't agree with their decision, but if the devs support it, i guess i can't say anything

if i were a dev, i would never endorse any mods, ever

This would only make sense to me if the original was somehow made unavailable or if the artist didn't provide support for it.

Well, Custom Edition was a free addition for PC. They allowed anyone to mod it.

i don't like your example because wheelbarrows aren't exactly art--at least, certainly not in the same way that a video game is

there's nothing wrong with improving things--and if you want to mod games, i'm not going to stop you
i would just never do it, because i think of it as an insult

"oh, your game's okay, but it would be a lot better if i added a bunch of retarded/unnecessary crap in it"
i just prefer to appreciate the game how it is, and experience it as intended

personally I think that's a stupid analogy

I would return the wheelbarrow as to not give the company/store that sold me a shit wheelbarrow any money

I shouldn't HAVE to fix it myself

As stated before by others here, modding to fix bugs is kind of stupid, the devs should fix those. If a game is unplayable without the use of mods I don't think it's worth playing.

On the other hand, modding to add content/update the graphics seems perfectly fine to me. It's not like you are changing the art in an irreversible way or taking away from the appreciation you have of it. You're simply adding a twist to it, similar to song covers.

I see nothing wrong with enjoying a game once and then throwing stuff in to mix things up.

skyrim is a perfect example, apart from combat it was a good game, but with mods it's an excellent game.

I like expansion type mods and performance mods pretty much exclusively.

Pretty much I just improve player model skeletons and the graphics in general, and after that there's a whole other experience waiting to be had, a whole other work of art made by independent developers.

Like the Wheels of Lull mod for Skyrim, which is practically another game.

If you don't approve of mods like that, then there's a fuck ton of games that wouldn't exist today if you had your say.
Counter-Strike is one of the most notable.

But I mean, if you just want rocket boots in Halo, there's a reason they weren't in the base game yeah...

It was one of the most important and revolutionary FPS games of all time!

And that completely fails to address the idea that a game can be used as a base for an entirely new experience that isn't part of the original game.

I get why you wouldn't want to add weird shit to a game, but there's a side to modding that's essentially people sharing their own games on an open source platform.

A lot of the best developers in the industry start as modders, and supporting new talent is important to me as someone who cares about this industry.

In all, you shouldn't expansionary mods "defacement" of someone else's art.

Think of it as a second statue made of marble from the same quarry as the David.

I think that quite a few of us understand the position, we just don't entirely agree with it.
