It's a thing now.

Inductees thus far:

The only one that makes me raise an eyebrow is WoW, but you know, whatever.
I think a hall of fame for games has been quite overdue, so I'm happy it exists now.

Here is their stated criteria on their nomination page:
Quote
The World Video Game Hall of Fame recognizes individual electronic games of all types—arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile—that meet the following criteria:

  • Icon-status: the game is widely recognized and remembered.
  • Longevity: the game is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time.
  • Geographical reach: the game meets the above criteria across international boundaries.
  • Influence: The game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general. A game may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.

Thoughts?

As long as it doesn't become a circle jerk or tool for self promotion I'm fine with it.

I agree with your reaction to WoW being in this by the way.

I feel like Vice City never gets any love. It's my favorite GTA (then again, I'm not a GTA fan).

I would say any one of those 3 games should be in there but I think GTA 3 should be the one.

That was one of the most revolutionary and influential games of all time.

EVE should be in there.

It didn't start the trend of casualizing the MMO genre and instead fights against it. Don't hold your breath.

EVE's a great game, but from what I can tell, this list is about those games that significantly shaped an entire genre or laid the foundations for many games to come. As far as I know, EVE didn't really do that.

The only thing WoW did was casualize the genre. Ultima and Everquest would have been better to pick if you wanted to represent the MMO genre.

I'm not arguing that WoW is the best pick, though. I agree with you there. Just pointing out why I don't think EVE deserves a spot on the list (either). A great game? Yes. But one that defined and shaped a genre to the point that it became one of gaming's foremost landmarks? Not really.

I never said it should be in there. I just said that people shouldn't hold expect it to get in and threw a jab at WoW in the process.

Ah, fair enough.

Slightly off topic, but more games should copy some of EVEs mechanics. It would help the genre as a whole and remove some of the stale and monotonous aspects of the modern casual MMO are designed to try and cater to the lowest common denominator.

Economies that are actually controlled by the players (for the most part) and losing assets upon death are things I'd like to see in particular.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
No Zelda and/or Minecraft?

Otherwise seems like a appropriate list.

I love you, son.
Great list. Would be nice to see GTA on there (personal choice would be San Andreas but any of the three main GTA III games would do).

No Halo 2? Bullshit list
Because Halo 2 wasn't the first FPS to start the trend of "competetive" shooters. Many came before it, like Quake.

Doom was Quake's spiritual predecessor, was it not?

And Sonic definitely doesn't belong up there. At least not for now. Sure, he was more popular than Mario for a short period, but he never really did anything revolutionary or important (that I recall). It was just a relatively simple platforming game on a console that was advertised really well.

If you know, you know.
Seems like a good list so far. Would've also expected Quake I to make an appearance.
Same. At least Doom is on the list, I have a feeling it should not even have to be voted in.
Whats wrong with WoW though? Its active player count (even after 10 years) is always in the high thousands. Its a solid game with very addictive elements.

Except it's the shooter that made console online gaming huge.....

Except it didn't start the trend of "competetive" online shooters. It doesn't matter if consoles were late to the party.

Guy, this isn't the end of the list. I imagine every year, they'll pile more games onto it, and we might see the entire Halo trilogy on there at some point. Don't you think the list is good for the first six? I mean, you can't leave out Mario, Pac-Man, Pong, and Tetris.
