Just started my playthrough of the Witcher 3 (GOTY, all DLC included). Never played a Witcher game before (other than the first half hour of the Witcher 2). I'll be playing on the Death March difficulty (the highest setting), so any and all tips are very welcome. How do I successfully beat this game, friends?
Read the Bestiary, use oils and QUEN! Good luck. I tried Death March and said fuck it, no thanks.

Use everything available to you. The combat isn't just limited to spamming quen (though you likely will need to for the first quarter).

Alchemy is OP.

I played death march, only the beginning is difficult.

I just started playing the Witcher 3 a few days ago. Be prepared to use Alchemy a LOT on higher difficulties. Also, points from leveling up should be spent wisely (compared to lower difficulties where it isn't really too important).

I'm kind of disappointed with the combat, personally. It would be a lot better if Geralt actually attacked his foes instead of spending half the time doing fancy little pirouettes.

What everyone else said. The lore is a big thing and they'll throw stuff at you, so watch this to understand stuff a tidbit more.

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
-Utilize potions as best you can. Ignore the potion skill tree despite this though, it isn't very useful, unless you absolutely love brewing potions.
-Upgrade Swallow and Thunderbolt, the most essential potions IMO, whenever you get the chance.
-The crossbow is only useful for bringing down flying monsters so ignore it in combat because it will literally do nothing to opponents.
-Invest points in Quen whenever you can. May seem like the most boring sign to use but it's actually a life saver, especially later on when you can move with a shield/gain health points when using it.
-I never use bombs because they're too fiddly but if you feel like your play style gravitates to that sort of thing then go for it.
-Only use Witcher armour sets for maximum buffs depending on your play style. Wolf school for hybridized combat and signs, Griffin for maximum usage of signs, Cat for maximum combat, and Bear for maximum defence at the cost of stamina. In Blood and Wine there is an additional armour school called the Manticore which specializes in alchemy.
-Choices sometimes aren't the most transparent so be prepared for some unpleasant, or maybe even pleasant surprises when you make choices throughout the game.

That's just a rough outline of how to survive the game. There are some OP builds out there you can find on YouTube that basically shrek everything in sight but I wouldn't recommend it unless you just want to grind through the game.

Ugh, not at all. Crafting and alchemy have always been some of my least favorite parts of any RPG. I got all achievements for Skyrim without ever doing either, I believe. Sucks that I'll need it here. Anyone got any good tutorials on how to do it properly?
It's actually quite fun though. As opposed to Skyrim where you just find schematics off of dead bodies or purchase them from vendors, in the Witcher 3 obtaining most schematics are mini quests in and of themselves. Sometimes you'll need to find schematics for potions in order to create more advanced potions. While the UI may be a bit fiddly a times, it's extremely addictive crafting new potions and looking for schematics in dungeons and bandit hideouts.

As I said, the alchemy tree isn't necessary for a good potion build, but potion's are vital for survival on Death March. Luckily it's not a tedious grind trying to obtain them.

Acquired tolerance allows you to use 3-4 decoctions at once, depending on your max toxicity.Pair this with tissue transmutation and you essentially have a permanent Hp boost of 3000-4000

Hightened tolerance, poison blades and synergy are also excellent.

Combine all these skills with the Euphoria mutation and you have the highest DPS build in the game for melee and signs.
