What's funny as hell is that W&C along with the fishing mod rely on SKSE and FNIS.

The authors of which did not give people permission to monetize their work.

Valve didn't even think this through. They just saw dollar signs and decided that the short term cash was worth the price of destroying the modding community. Not only is this causing infighting amongst the community but now that mods are getting monetized you can expect that the companies who previously turned a blind eye to this legal gray area to start filing DMCA's to protect themselves from having derivatives of their works sold without their permission.

Personally I just can't see myself paying for a mod for largely the same reasons I would never buy into early access. Hell these days I can barely trust professional devs much less some kid on his laptop. Valve taking a 75% cut for doing nothing, and people stealing and monetizing mods others created is moronic tho.

Oh dear.

This could go either way, it could pull people towards Steam making it more of a monopoly, but on mods as well as games and shutting down 3rd party sites like Nexus or NMA.

Or... it could push people away from it, and revive these places that have been slowly in decline as games lose popularity over time (see mods for Fallout.)

Although people are having gripes with Valve for the 75% "tax" on this, I'm not going to call out greediness until I know a bit more facts. It could be that in this case, Bethesda has levied a high charge on Valve so that modders can make profit off of originally the devs' work. Another scenario is that the cut is because the fact the modding content isn't truly the owners' content in regards to the developers, and so it limits how much profit they could make, though this put's Valve in a more money-grabbing light.

Very rarely does a mod use 100% original assets. As such, "paid mods" are a more of an intellectual property minefield than it already was because now people have the potential to monetize items that don't belong to them. This was an incredible short-sighted and ill thought-out idea.
