except the type of person that this image was designed to mock is the type of person who hates TLJ

hate the movie all you want, but it's kind of sad that you can't even come up with a single coherent reason to do so besides "things didn't turn out the way i expected or wanted"

is it really contrarian to oppose reddit-tier opinions on movies

in any case, it's because people (read: the fans) are wrong, and have always been wrong, simple as that

You're defending a film that has literal Disney channel tier themes.

Wait don't tell me, Canto Bight was the epitome of artistic vision and broke film making barriers. Embarrass yourself more.

If you're gonna meme your way out of defending a milquetoast, haphazardly constructed film then might as well as respond accordingly, no?

do you know what milquetoast means, or is it just a word that you like to use? because you could justifiably use that word to describe TFA if you wanted—i would still disagree, but i'd be able to see where you're coming from, at least

what exactly did you find "milquetoast" about Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)

it couldn't have been the film's uniquely aggressive and unwelcoming tone, or the relatively cutthroat script, because those traits would tend towards the opposite of that term you used

(read: the fans)
So, the entire audience this series is directed towards is wrong for having any kind of criticism that detracts from your point of view?

And note, I do agree with you on many points regrading the Sequel Trilogy, even though I wish it had never happened.
Spoiler
Aside from what they did to my boy Luke. My love for the character blinds me too much from what they did to him, as a fan of the EU/Legends stuff that didn't suck hot garbage.

that's the thing

i'm not so sure that the audience star wars has right now was EVER the audience it was directed towards

there's plenty of interviews from the '80s where the cast members all seem genuinely baffled at the films' reception, and even alec guinness openly expressed his disdain for the childishness of ANH's script in his journal

one of the stories mark hamill likes to tell is about how he used to get hung up over very small details during shoots, such as worrying about whether his hair looks too clean after escaping the trash compactor—but then harrison ford would just pull him over and say, "hey, kid. it's not that kind of movie."

star wars was never meant to be this great tour de force that it wound up being for so many people—they are popcorn entertainment movies and NOTHING more, because those were the kind of movies george lucas loved the most

everybody on set understood this, but the fans didn't, and here we are

that's where a lot of the hatred of these new films comes from too, i think

given the decades upon decades of extra material published and subsequently de-canonized by the mouse, i can understand if you grew attached to those stories (that didn't suck hot garbage) and wanted to see elements of them reincorporated, rather than completely put aside for this new, scary, unfamiliar story

i never cared to consume any of that auxiliary shit, so my perception of the characters has remained untainted by them

It's milquetoast for the wrong reasons whilst simultaneously being incredibly contrarian for also the wrong reasons.

Are you really trying to argue that the self serving, masturbatory "we just gots to save the abwused animals uWu" segment (which we've been subjected to in literally every garden variety disney film before) was narratively poignant in any way shape or form.

Then again, you just opined that TLJ is the best in the franchise, so it wouldn't surprise me if you did.

no, but you see, in a kid's movie about good vs. evil, it's generally a good idea to have your main characters do heroic things, especially if it gives them an excuse to have some high-octane chase scene or whatever

what exactly did you want? every star wars movie has about 12 of these, so i'm not sure what you were expecting

that said, sure, it was probably the lamest part of the movie, okay? now pick something else to harp on

My favorite part about the save da animals scene is rose saying "this was the real victory" but they left all the little slave children behind

It's right before the code breaker picks them up with a ship, Rose releases one of the animals:

Quote
ROSE: No. Now, it's worth it.

Your second link has her say "Go. Now it's worth it." but that doesn't really make sense since she was talking to Finn about how he said beating up the bad guys was worth it.

EDIT: Both links have her say "Go". I'm going to have to rewatch that scene to see who's she referring to.

To be fair their next stop was the Supremacy which isn't the best place to be bringing children.

But also the freeing of the fathiers wasn't Rose and Finn's goal, it was an unintended consequence of their mission that was brought about by the kids themselves. The kids made the choice to set the fathiers free which simply provided a means of escape for Rose and Finn. "Now it's worth it" is just Rose acknowledging that something good came out of all the mess they just caused. This also goes back to the bit where the kids try to stop the stable owner from abusing one of the fathiers. Even if they get recaptured again the brief time they have in freedom makes the effort worth it.

As for the kids themselves, Rose gives the kid her ring as a promise that they'll eventually be able to make things right. Fighting for the downtrodden could have been a good theme to tie the whole trilogy (and the prequels) together but of course we got TROS instead. Funny thing is the whole "there are more of us" moment in TROS could have been a good payoff to that plot thread but instead we had to have Lando gather the entire galaxy off screen within the space of 5 minutes instead. The Finn subplot in the Trevorrow script seemed to do a better job at least.

Regardless of execution (which is a bit flimsy though I still like a lot of it) the Canto Bight arc does have ties to the overall themes of Star Wars and the film wouldn't really be complete without it.

Also there's actually not much that's contrarian about The Last Jedi, the entire film is a celebration of Star Wars but done in a way that isn't as mindlessly superficial as The Rise of Skywalker.

It's really entertaining how defensive people get about this film. Just bizarre.

I honestly do not give one iota of a shit if the fans are butt hurt or satisfied. All I can say with confidence is that TLJ was utter tripe. If that opinion gets your hackles up that much then there's not much point in explaining myself any further.

what gets my hackles up is that you can't provide a single good reason for why it's tripe that can't be summarily torn to shreds

even i could point out better examples of flaws that you probably haven't even noticed or considered

Your opinion literally just consists of spite against fanboys. You haven't addressed anything I've said that isn't frothing at the mouth hysteria over the OT and "Star Wars fans", or whatever the hell that even means or constitutes. Forgive me if I didnt, and still don't take your "observations" with a whole lot of cogency.
