I would say GTA Online, but I don't think that was as hyped as badly as what Destiny is. I remember an article at GameSpot that was about Bungie talking about the spaceships. They were saying they were going to be the shit and sometime after that we find out they're nothing, but loading screens. I also remember when No Mans Sky got announced. There was this shit storm on Bnet because people were mad that this small time indie team is having fully controllable spaceships. And then there's Bungie which is this AAA developer that doesn't even have space combat in the game.

I laughed quite a bit. Destiny has a good and interesting lore/universe but the in game story is a joke, with most of it told through grimoire cards.

Too bad 90% of people will never read those because they are not in the game.

I don't get why Bungie did that same mistake agian. In Halo the majority of the lore and important things like the Spartan programs complete history and why the war started are in the books or only explained in the books. They didn't have to go into 100% detail, but you would think they would have gave a decent back story in the games and leave the books to go over it in more detail and extra things. You would think for the first game in their brand new IP they would put everything they can into it like what they did in Halo CE. I don't get why Bungie became so lazy after Halo 2.
