I think 8 players is plenty.

Don't see why the tournament can't be done with an odd number of players either. That's what byes are for.

Everyone is in two separate groups of either 4 (total of 8 ) or 5 (total of 10 players) they all fight each other to determine who fights who when the elimination comes around.
