well i thought they were, but i wasn't 100% sure on it

That is a question we have no answer for. The fire always gets linked (possibly untill Dark Souls 3s ending) so the bonfires will continue to exist, and so we have no answer to what actually happens if it fades. People speculate that the age of dark would do many things such as mutate people into dark monsters like we see in Dark Souls 1s DLC when the original keeper of the Dark Soul is resurectes or even transform them into dragons like we see in Dark Souls 3 when the fire is the weakest it's ever been.
Even in Dark Souls 3s end of fire ending it is suggested that another fire will eventually come into existence.
