Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu is an overlooked gem worth trying out, and a personal favorite of mine

it's a weird combination of final fantasy and pokรฉmon where you capture these magical bugs in the forest and fight stuff with themโ€”but the coolest part is that you get to merge them together to make even stronger bugs, and they all look different, and there's a bajillion different weird things you can make

it has a pretty compelling story as far as JRPGs go, the music and atmosphere are orgasmic, and the OP and character designs were created by Studio Ghibli

the battles are fairly slow-paced and overly simplified, though, so don't expect fast or complex gameplay or anything

Not at all. The numbered entries in the series are all their own separate thing, no prior experience is needed unless you weirdly decide to play something like X-2 before X if you're retarded.

But if you had to pick 1 PS1-era FF, I'd recommend 9. It had the best story, music, characters, villain, everything. Plus its characters don't look like playmobil.

Plus it has the best song evar.
