You should have dropped it when the lattice hit. It would have saved you both time and money.

Good luck finding someyhing though. The only thing I can think of is TOR but even that has some form of a subscription that affords you a bunch of convenience perks.

ESO is going buy to play, Granted I haven't played it since launch, but when I was playing it the group dungeons were the highlight of the experience. That and ganking people on cyrodil.

Other than that there's EVE, but that requires a sub.

elite dangerous is sort of an mmo, and it's a 1 time buy. the only problem is that for a majority of it, it's euro truck simulator space edition. if you're into that, go for it.

It already has a couple free worlds.

Edit: it seems as if you can make a free account and play tutorial but you can't actually play the worlds

More like 21 months. However, if he falls in love with the game then he might be able to self-support his subscription by the third or fourth month.

If you don't mind pay to play, I would recommend Final Fantasy 14 Realm Reborn. As someone who's invested dozens of hours into it, I can say it looks beautiful, has an amazing soundtrack, and combat is fun.
