but I hate Sony's stick layout on their controllers. Is it possible for me to get a PS4 controller with an Xbox layout?

There is the official Sony Pro controller - funny enough it has the Xbox stick layout. So even Sony knows the superior stick layout since they call it Pro.YouTube

How else are wireless controllers supposed to work.

Just sayin, i find it much more convenient to be able to use both a rechargeable battery and AA batteries on the boner than to be forced into using the rechargeable batter on the ps4. There have been times where i pick up the controller on the PS4 and then realize that i'm going to have to wait another hour or two to actually be able to play because i left the battery on like 10% without realizing it the last time i played.

It's what I do when my controller isn't charged.

For some reason the controller will only charge if it's plugged into the PS4 though, so I just usually leave it cabled all the time.charging cable doesn't reach to my couch
