Yeah, I don't really know much about competitive pokemon at all.
Gotcha. Are you familiar with Smogon, or at least the distinction between Smogon rules and VGC rules?
Quote
Like, what would you suggest and say about Charizard, Metagross, Gardevoir...? Preferably offensive ones, really.
These are Pokémon I basically never use, and while I could certainly help, I'd probably just be regurgitating a lot of what their Smogon articles say--so I'll just direct you to their pages instead. Smogon is a great resource.

Charizard
Metagross
Gardevoir

All of them are absurdly powerful when given their respective Mega Stones. Mega Charizard X and Mega Metagross in particular are among the strongest selections in the competitive metagame (barring VGC rules). Mega Charizard Y is also pretty stupid, but very overrated--Stealth Rock invalidates it completely. Mega Gardevoir is strong, but delicate.

Jacob Potila was actually a Jacob Flotilla of lies.- WarTurkey
Mega Altaria is also pretty great. Generally pretty easy to set up with and plays kinda like a ghetto Mega Salamence.

I hatched a shiny Swablu while trying to breed a competetive one. It doesn't have all the stats so I use it as an all out attacker

I'm familiar with them, but not aware of all the details. VGC is pretty much always doubles though, right? I've watched a decent amount of competitive pokemon without actually playing it myself.
vgc a shit smogon 4 lyfe

But yeah VGC is doubles where you pick 4 Pokémon, with These rules:

All discovered Pokémon will be allowed except the following Mythical Pokémon: Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Diancie, and Hoopa.

Teams may have no more than two of the following Pokémon: Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde.

All items will be allowed except Soul Dew. Each Pokémon must hold a different item.

Smogon has pretty much every battle type with a tiered ban list, no putting more than 1 Pokémon to sleep, no moves that only up evasion, and no one hit KO moves.

Smogon rules are well-regarded for being a much more "balanced" way to play the game which promotes team variety, especially because each of the metagame's core tiers (PU, NU, RU, UU, and OU) are based on how often a Pokémon is used, rather than how "good" a Pokémon is.

Also, Pokémon are banned only when they actually break the game, or when they promote decidedly un-competitive tactics--not just because they're a "Mythical Pokémon."

VGC is criticized for its arbitrary ban list and no team regulation whatsoever. You can put as many Pokémon to sleep as you want. Pokémon like Primal Groudon and Mega Kangaskhan run rampant on every single team, because they're that powerful. It's just a joke of a metagame when you don't have some regulation--but it's the official way to play.

Oh baby the dream is alive.
yeah but then you have to use hyper beam...

I prefer tri attack because you can use it every turn so it's a net gain in damage over 2 turns plus the chance to burn/freeze/para

To be fair, Porygon Z is one of the few Pokemon that Hyper Beam is actually viable on. It's pretty badass as a revenge killer.
Time to breed a Porygon-Z I suppose. What would you suggest?
Porygon-Z @ Choice Specs
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest/Timid Nature
- Tri Attack/Hyper Beam
- Dark Pulse/Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt/Ice Beam
- Trick
I'd say Nasty Plot > Trick, and give it a Life Orb instead. People shit themselves when Porygon gets a boost off. I always thought Trick + Choice was kinda gimmicky.

I also prefer Download as an ability, but it's kinda tricky to use if you're just starting out.

I have no idea what either of them do. And Adaptability seems great for Hyper Beam.
In thinking about it, yeah, Adaptability is better for the set you're going for.

Nasty Plot is like Swords Dance for special attacks--ie. it doubles your special attack stat. Scary shit.

Trick is a silly move that switches Porygon-Z's item with its opponent's, and since you're giving the defending Pokémon something like Choice Specs, it can severely cripple any Pokémon that need to use a different move every turn (Choice items lock you in to one move until you switch out). You might also get something nifty like Leftovers in return, which can be nice.

I don't like it because Porygon-Z isn't the fastest Pokémon in the world, which makes it difficult to use effectively against anything that outspeeds it. It could also totally backfire, and you might get something horrible in return, like Black Sludge or another Choice item. Not to mention, by giving our opponent Specs, you're sacrificing a lot of your own attack power (and potentially giving your opponent some attack power). It's just kinda dicey.

you don't trick unless you know it will fuck up the opponent. Otherwise you just use the specs yourself.

Like giving choice specs to a wall can completely fuck them up because they're reliant on using some combination of a status move/recovery move/protect

Or giving specs to something like azumarill/scizor who 100% won't be running a special set

Umbreon feels so good in doubles as a special wall, so much utility and deceptively Tanky, and Stab foul play can do so much damage to sweepers.

Shame I can't get him to work in singles very well

Well yeah, that was the other thing. Since Flee's just now getting into this stuff, he's not gonna know when and when not to use moves like Trick, because he doesn't know what items are typically held by which Pokémon.
