Oh please. Flee don't bother yourself with RTS games that haven't evolved from the Age of Empires play-style.

Play Wargame Red Dragon.
>Over 1500 units
>Requires a lot of situational awareness and knowledge of units so there's genuine depth to gameplay
>Reconnaissance mechanic that actually works well.
>North Korean nukes
>Dutch nukes
>Many different countries to chose from
>No boring base building just combat

I could go on but I'd need to start writing proper sentences. The game is a solid example of modern RTS

I used to also have a video that answered such a question but it was deleted a long time ago.

Basically it comes down to scope and scale of a match. Games can either be StarCraft 2 quick or DnD nightmare lengths that go on forever. You can zoom out to see the entire map which you're gonna need to do since some units are so massive they can't fit in the initial starting screen. They're also massive enough to downright stomp on smaller units when walking on them.

Economy and tech are pretty straight forward but can get complex as you try to balance it in mid to late game. You need mass to build units and structures and power to run them. You can freely build power structures anywhere on land but mass deposits can only be built on predetermined yields on land. Mass and energy can also be obtained in alternative methods as the game progresses. Tech starts out small with tiny scouts boats and tanks but tech can quickly upgrade to tech 2 and then tech 3 which lets you build massive warships, bombers, and strategic artillery which can fire tactical nukes clear across the map.

Lastly, there's the fact that you aren't restricted to one type of combat. You have land, air, and naval units for combat and they all compliment each other. Couple this with what I said earlier about scale and size of playable maps and you have a full scale war against your opponent.

Oh and the game is like eight-ten bucks (if that) on Steam. It's chump change, buy it.
