Start with Persona 3, this game kinda aged like milk

though every game up to 3 is very dark, 3 being one of the darker ones.

like i've been saying, i prefer to play games in release order

this also happens to be the only game in the series that NO persona fan has ever recommended me, so naturally, being the contrarian i am, i gravitated more towards it

watch it end up being my favorite lol

Probably because most Persona fans (me included) started with 3. If you like it though, have fun. I still need to play it tbh.

I can't speak for the other games (P1/2) but I think the main reason you'd like 3 is because despite the Japanese school life and all that, the overall story is just insanely grim and plays into some of the things you've said about humanity, even if at the end it's the usual unification friendship business you've come to expect with any sort of media that dabbles in friendships being a strength.

looks like i need find my psp + its adapter

they have it so you can download it on ps3, but then they ask you to transfer it to the psp

because that isn't misleading at all

For Persona 1? Ew. That's shitty. I know 3 and 4 can be played on PS3, I do that.

That's how I play it. It has the updated music too which has the singer from Persona 3, so I like it a lot more. Something about women with deep voices (by women standards) when they sing is appealing to my ears.

i'll be playing with the original music

if i can't play it on a TV screen, i want the closest approximation to the original unamericanized experience possible

never mind that's not an option in this game, only p2

the re-release actually takes it back to the Japanese origins. I think the original release in the west changed it so much it was terrible.

Though admittedly Persona 4's battle theme, and general OST easily trumps P3's.

hmm, i'm getting conflicting information here

just to be clear, by "original music," i mean the original soundtrack for the initial japanese PS1 release

i've been told that the PSP edition updates the music, but there is an option to revert back to the original

There might be an option, but a top comment on the video says there isn't. But keep in mind the director felt the new updated music would fit the general theme of it better as well. 2's ost remains unchanged.

It's just P1 they went back and cleaned up a lot from the cutscenes, sprites, music, etc. But kept everything else intact. New stuff fits what Persona is more anyway. But if you're a purist, by all means go with the original.

Last post before bed

Just keep in mind Persona 1 to this series is what Final Fantasy 1 is to that series. The story isn't that amazing, and the character development is non existent, and the gameplay is just... yeah. Persona 2 is where it comes to life and many Persona fans will tell you it's the best in the series in terms of writing.

well, i liked FF1, and i probably have the most patience out of anyone here when it comes to retro games (it saddens me that PS1 is considered "retro" these days), so i'm not too worried about that

i am looking forward to persona 2 as well though (despite the fact that it's two games)

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
I think you'd really like Persona 3.
I wouldn't draw that conclusion from just playing Persona 1. They are two different beasts; it does have some neat concepts like memento mori, but the gameplay and story are so far apart from P1 and P2.

luci keeps telling me to play it, too, but that's gonna be awhile, given that p2 is split into two games and all

remind me why that is? because it's kind of obnoxious from a consumer standpoint

Why P2 is split into two games? Halfway through development, the lead writer thought the story could use another perspective besides the Innocent Sin protagonist, so he began working on the foundation of Eternal Punishment. After IS was do being made, a bulk of the IS team jumped over to work on EP, including some quality of life reworks and improvements gameplay-wise.

It wasn't a money thing, they just decided they wanted to do more with the game at a point where they couldn't just go back and add it in (also probably couldn't do it on one disc, either).

i see

i'm also just aware that these games tend to be a billion years long, so that's also a bit daunting, given how far behind i am

Don't worry about future games; as far as most are concerned, P1/IS/EP are a different game series than P3/4/5. Outside of a couple of easter eggs, they don't even connect by story.

And P1/IS/EP combined are about 145 hours long, whereas P3FES by itself is 95 (for average playthroughs, meaning completing the main story and doing a fair amount of side content but nowhere near completionist). They're long because they're JRPGs, but they don't start getting 100+ hour long until around P3.
