Yeah I can kinda see how Big Boss seems more like a fuckhead now. He essentially used one of his own guys as a human shield to die while he went off to do his own thing. No wonder Venom goes off the deep end. I have a sneaky feeling that tape he left him was to make him think that he was special when really, he's just using him.

The more I think about it though, it doesn't actually bother me that much. Sure, I was really excited to play as Big Boss again and see how he goes bad, but Venom Snake seems like an interesting character and we do KIND OF see BB as a manipulative bastard. It's just a shame we didn't really see a buildup to it or a payoff. Hell, even some more tapes on it would be nice.

 I don't agree with the decision but I think that complaining about it too much will only make it worse. We've already had like 3 games to play as Big Boss, this is something different.

I don't mind playing as Ahab. I think he has the potential to be an even better character than any of the Snakes.
But the game advertised that we'd be getting revenge, that we'd become demons in outer heaven, that we'd learn the secret to the greatest MGS mystery.

We didn't do any of that. Except maybe revenge, but that was wholly underwhelming.

But Big Boss isn't bloody. He isn't in Africa. He doesn't have his huge horn. He doesn't walk over dozens of burnt people. There's no vulture.

That's honestly what I'm thinking. There's no way Kojima'd pull that.

Now that I think of it... I reckon the last year or so of development was reworking the entire game to fit with what Konami had planned. Think about it... Ground Zeroes comes out in 2013, Phantom Pain... late 2015? I can't imagine, with the power of the Fox engine, that they spent all that time working on landscapes and balancing.

I think his voice actor did an amazing job, but he wasn't very well-characterised in TPP and sometimes had a tendency to overexaggerate.

I really liked his hamminess. He's an over-the-top villain for an over-the-top series, even if it's an anticlimactic end.

I liked how Afghanistan has an Old Western vibe. Especially the episodic format combined with hammy villains and characters like Skullface.

Love his design, by the way. He looks straight out of a spaghetti western.

They're both cowboys with a penchant for torture who want to tear down the Patriots, have an obsession with Big Boss, easily manipulate the cast into carrying out their goals (leading Big Boss away from Mother Base for Skull Face, basically everything in MGS4 for Ocelot),

and both get what they want in the end - Skull Face succeeds in bringing Zero down by rendering him a vegetable, and Ocelot resurrected Big Boss as well as got his world at war.

55% done the game. I played from 12 PM to 2:30 AM, only increased about 10% in my progression.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks I plan on writing my review. I want to 100% the game first, then make another save file and beat the game again.

I also want to watch trailers for the game once more, to see what was taken out.

I remember seeing gameplay of Big Boss from Ground Zeroes, AKA the real Big Boss, in The Phantom Pain. Which may indicate that we were meant to play as him at one point or another.

Alright so I finished mission 9. My main concern: game is getting a tad repetitive. I feel like the first mission and mission 9 (one with the tanks and missiles) are "oh shit m8" and then everything in between has been "extract/eliminate X". It's been fun regardless but I'm worried its gonna wear thin. Does the game shake things up very often?
