The year is sometime between 1985~1994. Diamond Dogs's Mother Base has been known as "Outer Heaven" since the late 1980's. Venom Snake, or "Big Boss" as the world knows him, has been mostly going slowly crazy as the effects of his psychosis take their toll.

The real Big Boss is ready to come out of hiding. He sends Ahab a tape, labeled "From The Man Who Sold The World", explaining everything from the plane crash in 1974 until now.

Venom Snake, a tortured man already on the brink of insanity, finally snaps as he realises his whole life was a lie. What was once an attempt to create an Army without a Nation is now an all-out sprint to Global warfare.

Big Boss, who already knew about Outer Heaven's nuclear capabilities, informs Ahab that if he doesn't remove the nuke, he'll regret it (which is why Operation Intrude N313 is on the back of the cassette -- it's meant to be a deterrence. This sparks the event known as the Outer Heaven Uprising (Metal Gear 1).

Big Boss sends his own son, Solid Snake, into the battlefield knowing full-well what he's up against. He wins, and Big Boss goes onto form Zanzibarland with Gray Fox.

That does make sense. Shame Big Boss didn't get to hear Zero's tapes.

I guess Venom Snake kinda sorta maybe went evil if you kill every soldier and off every target instead of fultoning them back to Mother Base, but not really. Big Boss was building Outer Heaven behind the scenes and probably had a much more interesting story of his own, but it looks like we'll never know for sure.

Yeah, and I'm extremely disappointed we didn't get to witness that.

The reason he was at Zanzibarland:

After the events of Peace Walker, when Big Boss finally took his rightful name, he realised The Boss had betrayed him. After that, he didn't care about pursuing her vision -- he cared about a world where soldiers believed in what they were fighting for.

Essentially, MSF was meant to be the peace-keeping organisation to pursue her vision, Diamond Dogs, Outer Heaven and Zanzibarland were meant to engulf the planet in never-ending war, and contradict her vision.

That's something the games never stressed enough. You have to look between the lines and stuff.

At first I was like "What the fuck? That's stupid. I want to play as Big Boss, not this fuck."

But then I realised...

Venom Snake > Big Boss. It just seems pretty fucking selfish for Jack to fuck off and leave Ahab with all the responsibilities. Kind of character suicide, IMO.

At least Ahab doesn't have a choice, and actually has a good reason to be pissed off. And, he looks cool.

But just imagine Hayter voiced Snake in Ground Zeroes, Kiefer was the medic, and then Hayter voiced Jack/Ishmael in The Phantom Pain.

I would have shit myself. Missed opportunity.

Big Boss needed a decoy octopus while he was building his Heaven. Perhaps he expected the Medic to understand, given the Medic was his most loyal and trusted soldier?

The more I think about it though, it doesn't actually bother me that much. Sure, I was really excited to play as Big Boss again and see how he goes bad, but Venom Snake seems like an interesting character and we do KIND OF see BB as a manipulative bastard. It's just a shame we didn't really see a buildup to it or a payoff. Hell, even some more tapes on it would be nice.

 I don't agree with the decision but I think that complaining about it too much will only make it worse. We've already had like 3 games to play as Big Boss, this is something different.
