A) Gravemind used Precursor knowledge to create his own portal to the Ark, as confirmed by 343.

B) Magic, though Forerunner tech is probably not going to let it slide.

C) Calculated risk, but Gravemind probably "wanted" it to happen too.

343's been fixing a lot of Halo 3's stuff. At least the contradictory things.

Hey, did you folks forget ODST or something? ODST explained how they found the portal. Engineers flooded invasion sites and found anomalies. They lucked out over africa when Vergil fused with the AI that overwatched Mombasa and found information on excavation sites that led to something more.

At the end of ODST you see other engineers examining the site with Truth floating down to pay a visit. After that they proceeded to glass the shit out of the area.

I assumed he meant "why did Regret initially cluster his forces on New Mombasa alone" and not the exact location of the portal itself.

Quote
Only none of these are actually plot holes.

Several of these were plot holes until recently. And there are much more pressing ones.

The easy answer to that would be not really since we were never shown any other parts of Earth beyond Africa. Australia got dunked and I'd imagine just about every other major population zone got plasma dropped on them too.

Don't forget about luminaries though. Helpful tools those things are.

Regret himself personally charged in for New Mombasa. Luminary was what I meant with the Forerunner tech thing, if you've seen the second last H2A terminal.

But really, I don't think this is much of an issue at all now that we have that terminal, it's pretty easy to think that they had the rough coordinates on the spot after interfacing with it.

A huge one that always bothers me when I start Arrival/Sierra 117. How were Johnson and Miranda able to get back to Earth faster than the Forerunner Dreadnought?

Most likely with Thel and a group of Elites, and there was never any mention that they arrived before the Dreadnought.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
The entire game is a plothole. Big enough for High Charity to actually fly through it.
I laughed harder than I should have

Except for ODST, in which Johnson shows up. And the fact that Johnson and Arbiter are sitting there waiting for Chief in Arrival.

Note, this is before 343 started fixing bungie's fuckups

-Landfall shows Chief's arrival in the day, but Arrival shows it at night
-How were Keyes, Johnson and Thel able to get back so quickly?
-To War
-How does Thel not know what a Flood ship is? Does he really think a ship trailing green smoke is brutes? WTF?
-High Charity, portal, etcetera*
-UNSC Frigates hovering in an atmosphere despite the UNSC bnot having sufficiently advanced antigravity technology*
-Firing a MAC round in-atmosphere would have devastated the area
-Where do Truth's Scarabs come from (The Covenant), "Truth's fleet lies in ruins"
-Miranda dropping a pelican on the platform instead of gunning it down and brining reinforcements
-Chief shows no signs of stress entering High Charity, despite being utterly terrified of the flood
-The Gravemind is high charity, really, the Gravemind should have just ensnared John in flood biomass, there are billions of flood forms across HC
-How did Thel get to the Dawn's bridge so quickly?

*- fuckups 343 has at least partially explained

1. How the fuck did the Gravemind get to the Ark? The only way to get there was the portal on earth, and if he made it there he could have easily attacked earth. I mean he could have at least launched a couple spores before going through the portal.
Well in Halo 2 the Gravemind could teleport Chief and the Arbiter so he must have teleported himself to the Ark when he found its location.

Quote
2. How did the Covenant know where the portal on earth was? Yeah, I get that they were told what planet to go to, but how would they know that it was underneath Kenya and not fucking Canada?
If anything I bet Truth's Dreadnought had the coordinates to the portal and the rest of the Covenant followed.

Quote
3. Why the fuck would Cortana send a flood infected Covenant cruiser to earth just to send a message? She nearly made the species go to extinct, that fucking cunt.
When you link up with the Elites on Floodgate, one says that the Flood-Infested Carrier that made it to Earth got past an Elite blockade. Cortana just recorded that message and sent it to Earth.

1) The Gravemind had access to Delta halo's transportation grid. That was Forerunner technology that teleported Chief and Thel, but couldn't teleport a ship. The Flood cannot randomly teleport around the place.

A huge one that always bothers me when I start Arrival/Sierra 117. How were Johnson and Miranda able to get back to Earth faster than the Forerunner Dreadnought? Not only that, but make it to the Crow's Nest and set up operations there. It seems like they've been there for quite some time. What ship did they take? How is it faster than the technologically superior Forerunners? Are Dreadnoughts just really slow in slipspace? How long was Chief laying in the jungle before Johnson and his search party found him? Would be nice to see a comic addressing some of this.
I recently played through Halo 3 and was wondering the same things when I was playing on those levels.

Halo 3 takes place like 3 months after Halo 2. Read the uprising comics to see what happened between 2 and 3 with the chief.

It's little more than a few days or maybe two weeks, from Cairo Station to Arrival. the Battle of Installation 04 started on August 30th, 2552, and the end of the war was late december, 2552 (March 2553 officially)
It took 3 weeks to travel to the Ark, on the edge of the galaxy, but maybe a few days for 05-Earth, at the most.

Really the only plot-hole left is how the Bomb got into the Ops Center in Crows Nest.

We can talk about pre-343i Halo 3 though.

I've never thought about that. Fucking lol.

Also, thought of one for H2; Gravy had access to I05's teleportation grid, why did he not just teleport a shit ton of flood past the quarantine zone?

I believe 343 addressed the first 2 on the forum. (The same one where they killed off the Ghosts of Onyx crew)

From what I remember, Gravemind didn't go through the portal on Earth. He built his own thing

Dunno. Maybe there's some type of failsafe that only allows a certain mass or volume through the grid at a given time.

The other thing to note is that clearly the Gravemind was able to get outside the Quarantine Zone (we see this on how he grabs Chief from the lake), but the interesting question would be why he had no motivation to do so.

I can theorize right now that maybe the Gravemind didn't want the Flood to consume the ring. If you think about it, no sentient life would land en mass on Delta Halo if the entire thing was Flood-ified. So he purposely limited the Flood to the Quarantine Zone until sufficient life with off-world transport presented itself. This seems to make sense, because once the Gravemind starts infesting High Charity, the Flood surges across Delta Halo and boarding hundreds of Covenant drop ships, forcing the Sangheili and Jiralhanae to form a temporary truce to cauterize Delta Halo.

That makes a lot more sense. Though his appearance under the lake shows that he must have infiltrated a good portion of the ring. I would presume his lair was in the quraantine zone.

Yup. As Cortana says in Halo 2's High Charity:

"That creature beneath the Library, that Gravemind, used us. We were just a diversion."

Sidebar: Too bad I wasn't in to Halo 2 that much when Halo 4 was out. I see now how similar the Gravemind and Didact's introductions are. Almost comedic that everyone was bitching about where Cortana got "Didact" from, yet she did the exact same thing in 2004 with the Gravemind.

At least for Derderct, we have H3 terminals and several elites shouting Didact! when he's awakened.

I really need to know how in the motherfucking shit Keyes, Johnson and Arbiter got to Earth before MC.

The only possible ride they could have gotten was from the cruiser that R'tas captured, and he arrived at earth 2 days later.

So everyone has their balls in a bunch over Johnson, Miranda, and Arbiter.

Here's what happened. Chief indeed reach Sol first. But when Truth found out about the Chief on the Keyship, he didn't want to bring the Covenant's greatest adversary right into the heart of his operations, so he held off on his approach of Earth to deal with the Chief.

During this time, Johnson, Miranda, and the Arbiter made it back to Earth.

During an explosion on the Keyship, Chief was thought to have been killed, so Truth ordered the Keyship to Earth. That's when he jumped ship.

Here's a question. What if they took a forerunner ship from the ring? Or hell, what if spark built one? Halos are also containment facilities, so I guess it doesn't make any sense to have ships flaying around on them. But then again, the Forerunners were crafty in their designs and protocols.

And, if not using a located ship on the ring, maybe spark had enough data in him to build a forerunner ship from scratch. Keep in mind, the covenant could operate the dreadnaught, but they couldn't actually use it to it's full potential regarding it's weapon systems or its slipspace capabilities.

If spark built a ship, and jumped to earth with keyes, johnson and arby, they could have made it back faster with spark's superior knowledge of slipspace.

You know what would have been cool though, on thinking about it?

Halos have been shown to be slipspace capable and moving along on their own. What if, in a twist over what we got in Halo 3, Spark moved delta Halo after it was purged of Flood, and sent it through slipspace and it appeared above Earth in all the calamity.

Halos are big weapon houses as well, and thinking on it, wouldn't it be something else to see that? Truth's forces are sacking earth, and an entire Halo appears in orbit, beating the dreadnaught before it arrives and allowing Thel, the Elites on the Halo, and the rest of the Human forces there to help earth push back against the Covenant.

John shows up as usual along with the dreadnaught, and things go from there. The escaped flood ship shows up as usual from the quarantine around High charity, and the tension starts to spike between Hood and R'tas when he considers using the Halo against the flood as they start to spread.

A full scale evacuation of earth and a retreat from both Human and Elite forces while somebody stays beind to fire it in an attempt to stop the flood at earth and stop truth from getting to the ark. Obviously, this doesn't happen and we proceed to the ark as usuall ala halo 3.

Just going on a creative streak I guess. Would have been cool to see though. Really wanted to feel like things were going batshit in Halo 3 and that this was the fight were it was all or nothing.

High Charity literally went to Earth and used the portal there.

Regret a shit.

She didn't send the ship, Gravemind did. She just took the chance of putting a message aboard it.

Hey here is a question I just thought of, would a human combat form be able to use forerunner switches? Like stopping the rings from firing like Chief does. Or would being floodified mess up the dna too much for it to recognise.

No. HC is 3x as big as the portal. There was no way that it would have been able to go through, and even so, it would have dropped billions of flood forms on the planet just from the failing superstructure, regardless of intent.

High Charity could not have physically used the portal

If systems detect flood in any form, they wouldn't allow it. Otherwise, the Gravemind would have already got the index on Delta Halo.
