Is Esports a legitimate sport?

We all know the titans known as LoL, DOTA, SMITE, etc. MOBA's are well known in the world of Esports. However, can we call them a legitimate sport like Football, Baseball, Tennis, etc?

We have games that are known as sports games(FIFA, NBA2K, Madden, Rocket League). However, can they be counted as an actual sport?

Or, is Esport the new term for competitive gaming? A whole new version of the original term sport, and to be kept that way?

Just wondering what your opinion is all.

I think it will always be "esports" never just sports

And yeah it's already getting some attention from ESPN and stuff so I can see it going more mainstream

Ever since the point was brought up (if I could find the vid, I'd link it), I find it silly people ask this. No one in the Esport community is even TRYING to legitimize it as a sport, they don't need to. As long as the revenue keeps coming the way it does, and it attracts an audience, it could be called "GAYMEZ FRENZY" and no one would give a damn.

It's very odd people outside of it try so hard to make it seem less of something than what it is, by saying it's not a sport, or others trying so hard to find a category for it to fit in.

The people in the Esports community don't care, and neither should you. Move along.

strictly speaking, yes, it is a sport. gamers are NOT athletes, and it is NOT an athletic competition, but it is indeed a sport, in the classical understanding of the word.

ESPN is a joke anyway. It's full of American retards who won't even so much as cover soccer, which is insanely popular now in this country. They are the typical last general that just goes "lol soccer" and ignores it.

It really does annoy me actually. The only highlights are of Messi or Ronaldo (rightfully so I guess) making goals. One time they showed an MLS game but it was the sprinklers coming on mid-game, and then proceeded to laugh and show no in game highlights.

I hate this country sometimes.

I'm a massive soccer fan, I am well aware. Thanks though! Still, I mean, if Sportscenter covers all the horrible baseball highlights, why not a HIGHLIGHT OR TWO FROM YOUR OWN DOMESTIC LEAGUE, HUH?!

But it's filled with the same old American snobs who think it's too "European" and "boring".

That's why this year they had to speed up the pitcher getting on the damn mound because it took too damn long.

Look, all I'm saying is that with soccer rising, that whole "it's not American" is a fucking joke and those guys at ESPN need to get their heads out of their asses. It matters more than just every 4 years.

Have fun with that. The average age for a baseball fan at this point is in their 50's, and attendance is just below/on par with soccer attendances for MLS games.

It's fallen out of favor with our generation in favor of American football and soccer.

Average age is 50s? Lol nah, I see mostly young people in the stands and on sports pages talking about it.

Attendance is only poor at Marlins, Rays, and Phillies games because those are the worst teams with the worst fanbases. Games will get around 30-40k in attendance at every other stadium. Dodger Stadium nearly sells out every game with around 50k people.

Soccer is only important during the World Cup apparently and football is always gonna get the most attention no matter what.
