D2's playerbase is apparently pretty bad, so its debatable whether its working or not. I imagine without traffic, an always online game like Destiny probably isn't cheap to keep up.

It would if they just reused assets from both and the D3 disc was just a compiler/key for the "new game".

Honestly I see this franchise shutting the entire studio down by the time Destiny 3 is close to its final stages of development.
